WIMA MKS and more caps discontinued / EOL

This does not look like its WIMA's fault. It looks so far like Mylar stopped making the film in that type/thickness and its looking like they were the only supplier. I suppose basing a product that has one part that is only sourced from one place was not the best idea, but, maybe they were the only ones left making it.

It sounds like WIMA got a very short notice EOL from Mylar. So then the question is why ? If damand was dropping that would have been predictable and a longer EOL would have been easy enough. This seems like something else. The timing is suspect. Trump did announce tariffs on Feb 1st towards china and China had previously banned export of some its back in late 2024. But this is Germany, not the US. So I dont know if any of this is related at all.

So maybe Mylar can clear this up, I will post if they respond.

In this case Germany, and WIMA, do not seem to have been the issue. Mylar is the issue.

Mylar is owned by Celanese and Teijin, which are US and Chinese.

I also dont see any production by Mylar in Germany.

So overall, IF Mylar has stopped making PET PEN as WIMA has said in the press release and gave WIMA little notice, then the issue lies with Mylar. As there seems to be demand for these films across a number of industries, I can't see Mylar just dropping it as the worlds largest producer. So this looks more like something happened in feb 2025. China and Trump were trading blows and maybe something happened because of this. But also maybe not..

I have no word back yet from Mylar or WIMA.. I will be continuing to work this and wont go away until i know what happened.

I really need the 10uF 50V MKS 2. Its size and performance are unmatched and i do not have room for a bigger part. So I really need WIMA to start production again. BUT who knows.

But Germany, or WIMA, does not appear to be at fault here.

I wonder if it either export restrictions or production issues.

High voltage films used in capaciors for pulse applications can not be a dwindling market considering the number of voltage converters. And that might be the issue, China is prioritising DC/AC converters for solar inversters and similar compared to delivering raw materials to foreign manufacturers of components higher up in the value chain.

I did notice that Mouser marked many of them as 'restricted availability' and unavailable for purchase even though they have stock which seemed a bit odd to me. Does anyone have the list of part numbers that is mentioned in that notice linked above?
