Hello everyone,
I have a YAMAHA DSP AZ1 that has the following problem. Any digital input used COAX or optical emits sounds only from the right channel (A and B), also the headphone output emits sounds from only one channel, I assume the right.
If instead I use any analog input, these work perfectly and for all 8 channels + the sub.
The Channel Test mode emits sounds only on the right channel.
I have already read the entire service manual and the user manual, I could not even find how to restore the amplifier to factory conditions.
Do you have any ideas? Could it be a disconnected connector? What should I check?
Thanks

Hi. Schematic or link to SM? Pictures?
Or should we also have to search all that besides helping out? Like if it was in our interest to repair our device?

Funny enough, I just purchased an DSP-AX1 - riddled with several problems as well. I assume the AZ1 is pretty similar.
Common issues are: Input switches in the connectors fail, relais fail, DAC/filter fail, Supercap fails.
Mine was sent in for repair three times by the former owner, and he finally gave up.
Last tech diagnosed several failed DACs, which I don't believe.
I'd check in the following order (and will do so myself):
Unfortunately, these are a pain to work on, and professional repair is not an option (too many paid hours, so a repair is always more expensive than a good working machine).
(I only paid for it as a parts machine, not sure if a repair is possible, so I don't expect it to be ever working again...)
Elektrotanya has the AZ1 service manual, too large to attach here...

I'd check in the following order (and will do so myself):
- Supercap (probably semi-dead, I assume this might lead to corrupted configuration data stored)
- input switches (one suggestion is to just short them to fix this ongoing issue)
- relais (probably underpowered and now worn out)
- DAC board

No, actually not.So all in all a wrong purchase. Not worth bothering, typical multichannel "features over longevity" throw away stuff.
This comes with no less than 10x PCM1704, plus 5x DF1704 (AX1).
At a price point of 5500DM or 2800EUR 20+ years ago, they certainly were not throw away stuff. Though some technical choices were made that leave more to be desired (they went with single sided boards of questionable quality all the way).
Again, I purchased it for parts, the display alone almost recovers the purchase price. And I hope to find a project to put the 1704s into.
The DSP AZ1, around the year 2004 was the best AV best buy, with excellent reviews also in stereo. I took it home for €300 and it has power, great channel separation, clarity and neutrality. I use it exclusively in stereo with 4 front speakers (A+B) and it has taken the place of a Rotel A14 preferring it, after a few tests to a Cambridge CX81. The AZ1 is still a DSP with the possibility of multiple settings, especially for the cut of frequencies for any subs. It would have been correct to indicate for example in stereo with €300 which 135W x 4 I could have taken to have better performance.🙂
P.S. I use a good recent DAC

Sorry, maybe I used too strong words (multichannel AVR type stuff usually is the gutter of audio) but PCM1704 is known for being a well sounding DAC chip but also from dying all of a sudden.
I suppose a 20+ years use will not make them more reliable either.

Main A + Main B, or others. Are there some configurations to have 4 stereo channel stereo with Yamaha AV amplifier
(On a sidenote, I found a 1794 piggyback board for the DAC board of the AX1 and AZ1, seems like the 1704 do fail a lot, even in this rather controlled environment, so that the chinese even bothered to create a plugin replacement board. To be found on TaoBao, and not terrible expensive...)
