One of the Universe's inscrutable tragicomedies is why these two abominable songs are used in near all speaker demo videos!
Does anyone really like this kind of music, and/or test their speakers with such stuff?
Maybe the guitar line on the Nils Lofgren song I can accept as something of a test in a narrow band, but jeez, the Dire Straits dirge - it's the MOR equivalent of Bass I Love You.

This has been done since the 50s, and is a very long tradition. There is a lot more bad taste than good.
What do you want? Diana Krall? One of the Universe's inscrutable tragicomedies is why these two abominable songs are used in near all speaker demo videos!

There is some rationale behind it: the song must be well known in order to facilitate comparison. It must be acoustical recording with well recognizable instruments and human voice. It must contain deep acoustical bass and cymbals or something that creates high frequency percussive noise. It should not be high art to impress critical listeners.
Icsaszar- This is not an accurate way to evaluate. Different rooms, different speakers, maybe different mastering of the same recording. Not to mention that auditory memory is very short. I usually audition with my own music slections but really have very little confidence in my assessment until set up properly in my system. Even after this I concede it could all be in my head.
Whenever I hear about Diana Krall, I immediately think: "Oh brother!.... another one of those so-called Elite-Type Audiophiles with Golden Ears!
Give me a break!
Try some classic Jim Reeves "Welcome To My World" to impress your guests.

You will not hear Orff's Carmina Burana in concert volume. Most systems would puke its guts out.
@Mark Johnson I have played all the tracks from Michael Hedges Breakfast in the Field and Live on the Double Planet innumerable times. Saw him in concert in the early 1990s. Loved his pioneering and interesting guitar tunings and instruments. The world lost a great one when he tragically died.
Are we supposed to recommend things we like? I thought this was a haters party?
What I don't get is why people actually listen to speaker demos on youtube...
If it's well recorded, you can get a sense of the speakers tonal balance. Most are not well recorded. What I don't get is why people actually listen to speaker demos on youtube...
