Hi All - I recently came across a pair of Zenith Allegro 3000 speakers at a thrift store. They have (supposedly Fostex) 16 ohm, 10" Alnico woofers and a horn tweeter. I'd read on a few forums that these are very efficient and they ARE much more efficient than my Advents. Does anyone have any specs for these or actually measured them. I'm guessing they might be 96-98 db/w/m. Is that close? I took the backs off, as someone suggested, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried these in a different enclosure. If so what design and dimensions? I'm thinking of eventually building something that's simple (since I'm not much of a carpenter) and is efficient enough for my DIY "budget Bugle" 45 SET that I recently completed. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated . . . Charlie

I've had 3 of these thru here. The Alnico base driver is a Rola (you can confirm by finding the number 285 followed by 3 other digits). There were many versions of the 1000/2000/3000 with woofers supplied by many manufacturers (including Foster)... but all the 16 ohm 10s i've seen or heard of were Rolas.
The samples i have are more like 88-90 dB efficient. I've kept 4 10s for my own use and will build a bipole something with them.
The horn is a Foster and really quite nice,

just a thought,
but refurbishing the original cabinets seems the
the best option to me, the speaker is still original.

The Allegro speaker boxes are amounst the worst ever made...suitable for burning only... not even worth saving for shelves,
Stock the speakers sound bad... take the backs off and it opens up a whole new world... put the drivers in a real box and they start to sing.

I thought both the drivers might be by Foster(ex) because they both seem to use the same numbering system. The tweeter is labeled Foster and 49-1168 while the woofer is marked Zenith but numbered 49-1240 and also 26322 and 2857419. Maybe the last number is the Rola number. Out of curiousity I dropped the woofer into another, slightly larger, bass reflex cabinet. I also tried it alone in the Allegro cabs by just disconnecting the crossover/tweeter. The woofer alone did not seem to be nearly as efficient as the combo and wasn't all that impressive by itself. I 'think' the Advents are about 88 db (maybe I'm wrong?) and the Allegros are quite a bit louder but they aren't nearly as extended in the bass or as refined in the highs as the Advents. I guess that shouldn't be too surprising. They do sound better with the back of the cabinets removed. Has anyone built any cabinets for these? If so, what design and dimensions?

I made that assumption when i pulled my first 2000 apart -- in that case the 8" woofer was a foster, but haven't recycled 10s of these now -- except for the 10" alnico Rola, i haven't run across 2 woofers the same yet.

wow, this is an old thread! I just got done pulling the guts out of one of these (will do the other tomorrow) I was wondering if somebody might be able to give me some info on the drivers if I post some pics... they do not look like the woofers you posted. but I do think they are from 1970.. the last 4 didgits are 1270..if I'm not mistaken they woulod have been made the 12 week of 1970? anyway I hope somebody can give me some info on the drivers..
Impedence of these speakers (from Zenith Allegro Wedge)
I'm wondering if it is OK to use a pair of these with my home theater receiver and additional (different) speakers. The other speakers are rated 8 ohms. Do you know the impedence of these Zeniths?
tweeter - Foster 49-1168 74.22
woofer - 49-1240 26322 2857428
gizmo on the side of the speaker cabinet - S-97277
Thanks!!!

16 ohm drivers
Data on the 4 pair i've had thru here. You can use it for a 1st pass at an enclosure

Thank you! So, I think this means I won't fry my receiver (rated for 8 ohm speakers) by hooking up the woofers. How about the tweeters, or do tweeters generally not draw enough current to worry about?

I emailed you about these speakers. I know this is an old thread, but just got a pair of the 10" 8 ohm allegros.
