Crazy high impedances in that RIAA network, much noisier than modern designs, but then the 709 noise performance isn't given in the datasheet and probably dominated.

Yea, but mine Is not so noisy.
With normal MM cartridges not more noisy than many other phono....

There are many poor noise performers in the RIAA preamp world alas, often justified by the fact surface noise is dominant when playing, but its simple to get reasonably low noise these days, and for MM both low voltage noise and low current noise are required for performance. Its nice not to have clearly audible hiss before the stylus descends...
