I love mcmaster.com for their completeness, but they won't ship one item USPS for $2. The minimum shipment is a 1 lb UPS box for $7 OH to IN. So order 2 or 3 or 6 things to make the $7 worthwhile.
Digikey carries some hardware in the smaller sizes, and they will ship USPS first class for $3 or so for under 2 lb. So check them out, they might be faster to you even since their warehouse is in MN. You have to ask explicitly for USPS in the shipping portion of the checkout, or they default to one of the package delivery services.

Try your local Ace hardware, they usually have an aisle dedictaed to all kinds of fassteners.

Anyone know of a source of reasonably priced screws? In particular, I am looking for some M3x8 equivalent to Sony 3-704-366-02. 3-704-366-02 Sony Screw Case M3x8 (Ep-fe/znbk)) Not going to pay $11.00 for an 8 mm long screw. All the M3x8's I can find locally or online from normal sources are standard thread (0.5 mm) and these are 'fine' or 'extra fine'.

Twice now I have found something McMaster Carr didn't carry.

The first item was a 3/8-32 nut as used on volume controls and F connectors. They did have some but they were rather fancy and unusually expensive. When I spoke to their specialist about the item she was unaware they were a commodity item. The ones they carried were custom made due to customer demand. The next catalog had the common version at a price for a bag of 100 for much less than the ones they previously sold.

Then this week I needed a guide bushing for a wood cutting router. They didn't carry them but offered to get them. My local Home Depots (6!) didn't carry them either. The local Lowes carried a version but not quite what I needed.

So I made one and ordered half a dozen from Amazon at a surprisingly high price.

So in my 40 years of using McMaster Carr for parts they are quite good at responding to things they don't carry and it ain't much.

(One of the parts I need on occasion takes a 4mm tube and connects it to a BSC threaded port! Always in stock. Another time one of my tools stopped working due to an air leak. Replacement cost $185,000. Turned out a valve was leaking. They did not carry the exact valve but did carry a rubber washer that would repair it. Unfortunately they only sold them in bags of 100. So I had to buy the whole bag, it was $3.00.)
