I improved many things at once so don't know what the main issue was... all tiny leaks closed, bigger amp and supply installed, added some bracing, and the low resonance issue has been tuned down noticeably. It does sound like it's a box resonance issue. I might need bigger and sturdier machine screws as well, rather than simple wood screws into 19mm MDF.
Just to put things into perspective, I am not trying to shake the house - "normal" listening levels in rather small room are required. Also, only this one song I found to be problematic so far, with extremely pronounced deep low end.
Looking at Troels' sub design - my box is not even close to that sturdy construction.

I guess the main point of this exercise was to prove that I could go deep (well below Fs=35Hz) and tight without a big box and expensive driver, for "normal" listening levels, given enough power and DSP equalization. If B&O could do it, why couldn't we. The rest is fine tuning
