Try going to the last post of a thread. It is controlled by XF and I believe the data is held in a temporary session cache for performance, not in the database. I still haven't worked out exactly what triggers XF to consider a thread read, but it comes from XF. I'd rather it is any visited link myself, and will work on making that work in the near future.
