I have a 3M PM7640 projector. When I first got it it would fire up for a
minute or two then the lamp light would turn red. Now the lamp will only
filcker a litle and won't light. How do I tell if the lamp or the balist is bad?
Is there an easy way to bypass the balist? Or anyone have a CHEAP lamp
for this projector?

To me that sounds like the lamp is dead-if it started originally the red light was probably a warning that the bulb was on its way out. I have messed with a couple 3M projectors and the ballasts would usually try to start the lamp at least 4-5 times before giving up; dead lamps would flicker or flash a little bit but could never stay lit. I ended up hacking up a lamp from a different model to fit in the case (not trivial, but kind of necessary on a college student's budget)-the ballast had no issue starting it up despite a slight difference in wattage.
