Selecting the power (VA) of a Pre-Amplifier transformer

In the audio amplifier world, when it comes to transformer power, it's usually a case of the more the merrier - within certain limits, admittedly, including space to put the blooming' thing! In the case of preamplifiers, particularly older solid-state discrete components, and especially when I'm trying to make things as small and compact as possible, I'd like to get a feel for how little 'overhead' I can accept without compromising the audio quality. Based on an assumption of around 200mA requirement, I'm planning to use a 5VA 18v single output (278mA) transformer.

Is this madness, or is +40% an acceptable margin?
