It is very important to design the optics, from illuminating to projection system. The dismatch of them will lead to low light output or uneven lumens output.
I have optimized a projector with 3.5" LCD, I use a 125mm focal length 4-element projection lens, one fresnel lens as field lens, one aspheric condenser lens and one spheric collimating lens, the rsult is very good.
Most of the DIY friends need optics support, because we need to use special optical design software to calculate it.
Generally to say, low F# leads to high lumens output, but the match of the projection lens and illuminating lens is very important, the image of the lamp should locate close to the entrance pupil of the projection lens.
