JBL gto 1202d subwoofer

I've randomly picked up one of these for an absolute song today and now need help in designing an enclosure. I've got a meaty Crown amp that bridges mono, it will supply more power than the sub needs but I think I can be sensible with it. I will be using a mini DSP for all signal processing, cross over and eq duties.

But here's the issue, can anyone help me design or even recommend a suitable enclosure. The size isn't a problem neither is any of the construction.

Music I listen to is, reggae, house, garage, dub step, etc etc

Oh the parametrises are freely available on the web but I don't know how to attach them here.

Help much appreciated

At a guess i would say a large low tuned ported enclosure is best for this one. Most dubstep has 30-40 hz bass as the low resounding fundemental note, however I have some ole scool stuff with strong 25hz content.

Seeing as its a 12" driver, for a half decent volume and good close to but not in corner placement i would recommend 25hz - 30hz for your tuning frequency.

Could alternatively seek advice and modeling for this driver in a tapped horn.. Can be a tall piller with a small footprint and offers substantial gain over a ported enclosure.

Ya unless its to go in a huge room i would recommend a lower tuning than most would, tends to sound less 'boomy' if the port starts contributing. > 40-45 hz and below, with direct radiation creating most of the > higher 'punchy' content, and the helmhomeys resonator outputting the more resoundy lower type waveforms found in dubstep etc.

Ok large box with tuned port is reminding me of car audio I was involved in from yesteryear. How do I go about obtaining a box size, port die soon etc. can you help ?

I know you can use simple box simulation software on the web where you enter driver specs and chose box dimensions and port length and diameter etc and it calculates frequency response, max spl for xmax etc.

Although, I would wait for another reply, im sure someone else can recommend a more accurate approach.

For a general idea can be good though to have a play.
A piller type tapped horn is an option if u can cross it at about 80hz, but its driver dependable.

Personally I would wait for more imput before progressing beyond the play/idea phase.

Just dont know enougth to correctly advise further as no pdf reader on phone for specsheet etc.

Just will guess instead.. someone may correct me if i am correctable rightfully.
..being a car sub its prob v 'stiff' built to be lower efficiency with higher power handling, relying on cabin gain to boast tge low end abd designed for a tight small sealed cab or fairly small ported cab..

Though im not sure what tuning frequency..

What im saying is awat more advice because the sub may not work well in a lower tuning larger box, though it should, best to do some sims and if lazy or neewbie abit get someone else to lol.. I would hav a go if had a pc to hand.

Yep was correct, its primary intended for a car so smaallish box designs.

This may help ppl, specs.
http://www.abtec.co.nz/JBL-GTO1202D.php them girraphs provided i wouldnt trust much.

However.. Google image searching the driver finds alot of sub builds, prehaps can findya summin there.
Intuition says a lower tuning is perfectly doable/better for a home sub. more advice is my advice

Hi Parm.

What will you be using for your main speakers? What size room will you use it in? This subwoofer favors a sealed enclosure but a sealed box may not be loud enough for your tastes. You could use it in a reflex enclosure that will need 3 cubic feet or more. Or if your main speakers can go low enough you could try a sealed rear band pass. The reflex and the band pass will need testing and tuning to get the best results.

I'm using a pair of bose 301 for mains and two of these subs in separate enclosures to make a stero pair.

A while back a mate bought over a 12" alpine car sub in a vented enclosure, it was quite small. We connected this up through a car amp and meaty power supply to my bose and it made a wicked wicked bit of noise, mproperly shoock the room.

I'm trying to recreated that. Room is 14' square. I have two of these subs and 1kw RMS AMP all to be run via a mini dsp.

The JBL info recommends a sealed, ported and band pass box but was wondering if there was any improved designs people knew about?

What!?
Did you ask it? :hphones::grouphug::joker::Pinoc::joker::Popworm:

Hi WaVeInFoRm.

Sorry. My use of words wasn't great.
I don't have one of the subs sitting in front of me to ask it personally. But using its T/S parameters I came up with an EBP of 50. An EBP 50 or lower usually works best in a sealed. The sub will still work in other enclosures. Maybe someone with much more experience than me can come up with something.

Matt.

Guys there's a spec sheet that's referenced in post 8. It's original from JBL and recommends three box designs. Is the ported one any good. I was thing to use THIER box size and then use Winisd to work out a slot port instead of round. What do you guys think ?

They "optimise" there designs.. For a car enviroment witch has a huge amount of cabin gain. And also need to make them fit in cars. I wouldn't recommend one of there designs.

Ya do some sims.

Hi All,
