Recommendations for PP EL84 circuits

Recommendations for PP EL84 circuit diagram

I welcome everyone.
I would like to create a Push Pull amplifier using EL84 tubes.
Could you recommend a good Circuit Diagram for EL84 PP?

Is there a proven combination for EL84 that most listeners like?

It had been said that it is hard to make an EL84 PP amp sound bad. The circuits mentioned will all sound very good if built correctly, and vary more by quality of parts and magnetics than circuit.

You did not mention your level of experience in electronics and solder slinging. If you are a newbie, I would recommend the Tubelab SPP - there are PCBs available and decent building instructions. The Tubelabs circuit is very simple, easy to build and simply sounds great. Additionally, George Anderson is a super nice guy and will help if you have a question, that is if you can’t find the answer on the fairly active tread here:

Tubelab Simple P-P

There are also offerings from commercial kit vendors that are good, for example Dynaco replacement parts & vacuum tube audio amplifier kits from Dynakit)

If you are experienced (and you can find a set of PCBs) build the Baby Huey EL84. I believe that is the most sophisticated and best sounding EL84 PP right now*. YMMV. But there is not a go-to source for help - it is up to your research of a long and sometimes wandering thread:

EL84 Amp - Baby Huey

There is also a Wiki on the build as well as a couple of people that described their builds on diyAudio.

*There is also the “Musical Machine”, that I have not heard with very good reviews, but that is run in triode typically and a bit more esoteric. Add to Rongon’s list the “El Cheapo”.

All the bits are important. We based ours on old Scott Iron.

It's hard to go wrong with the Tubelab SPP. I've built two. One using recycled Heathkit transformers sounds good. Another using new Hammond transformers sounded very good. A circuit board is available from Tubelab (forum on this site) or you can build one point to point or using tag or turret boards. The Russian EL84 equivalents sound decent and are quite rugged too. Obviously, the more you spend on output transformers the better it will sound but even with fairly basic transformers it can sound quite acceptable. The other tubes in the Tubelab SPP are: 12AT7/ECC81 (quantity 2) and GZ34 (quantity 1). Neither are rare or expensive. Good luck!

There are so many. It really is hard to make a bad PP EL84 amp.

Baby Huey EL84
Tubelab Simple PP EL84
Red Light District
Surprisingly good PP EL84 Amp (TCJ/Broskie)
Bevois Valley
Dynaco Stereo 35

...and so much more

Especially if you expand the choice to PP 6V6-oids, in which case you can add

Poindexter Musical Machine
Eli D's El Cheapo
EZ-10
The "Stupendous" 6P1P 4PP Amplifier

...and so much more

And if you further expand the choices to PP EL86, you get even more good choices.

Is everybody happy now?

Oh what the heck... Here's a collection of PP EL84 and PP 6V6-oid schematics. Let's argue over which one is 'best'...

Edit to add...

As you can see, the basic phase splitter/driver designs boil down to two:

1) Cathodyne (concertina) phase splitter to PP outputs
- Simple PP
- Bevois Valley
- Red Light District
- Unexpectedly Good PP EL84 (TCJ/Broskie)
- 'Stupendous' PPP-6P1P

2) Long-tail pair (LTP) to PP outputs
- Musical Machine
- El Cheapo
- Baby Huey

Choice of output tube configuration comes down to:

1) Pentode
- Red Light District

2) Ultralinear/Blumlein
- Baby Huey
- Bevois Valley

3) Triode
- Stupendous 6P1P
- El Cheapo
- Musical Machine
- Unexpectedly Good

Now ya picks yer poison or mix yer own...
