Mouser Restricting Sales to Some Hobbyists

Mouser has started restricting sales of some items to some hobbyists, with Mouser having arbitrarily decided that the affected hobbyists are actually 'Specialty Distributors' reselling certain items. This can occur despite no reselling or distributor activities having ever taken place.

Some commentary out on the internet:

Just a heads up in case it happens to you.

I haven't ordered in over a year. I always order in quantity. Everything I need now has been out of stock for well over a year.

I never thought it would come to the situation where electronic components would be restricted. This is very, very bad for business and very bad for the USA. I hope whoever caused this supply chain quagmire in the first place is deeply ashamed, but I bet they're not.

Those response blogs are a year old!
Old News!

I've never had a problem ordering from Mouser, my last order of about $200 in parts was back in February.
I've had an account with them for years under the name of my shop.

Without a doubt parts finding/ordering/extorting puts off more people from this hobby, honestly I don’t know how the commercial industry puts up with it much less us hobbiers. Corporate worship is real here in the states, but the glass house of the EU hardly has room to talk with higher prices, less selection, tariffs, outrageous shipping (even by post pandemic standards)

they have changed it to 'personal - hobbyist.'
It's good that they will do that. A couple of sources I use in the UK RSWW and Farnell aren't so simple. Farnell have wing called CPC for hobbyists. Farnell will add a handling fee for small orders and carry more stock than CPC. RSWW like to sell bulk or packs but may a offer things like 2 power transistors for amps rather than 10 or more. In the past both offered free postage to all. 😉 Maybe too many hobbyists as other sources had more or less dried up.

That now is rather different for the UK. Some retail outlets can sell less their local VAT. That is usually about 20%. Some can't or haven't bothered to sort that aspect out. If they have I can order and pay the 20% when it arrives here. Our local VAT. There is still a catch though. They now have to ship via an export channel - that costs more than shipping used to do. Forms need filling in and if the carrier does that the charges are excessive.

Anyway - buying stuff here from the USA doesn't work as well as it use to usually down to shipping costs. So high I wonder why some list on Ebay UK.

Did this actually happen to you recently or are you reacting based on the year-old Reddit threads?

I've never had issues ordering from Mouser. I often order parts in full reels (4kU or 10kU depending on reel size). I usually spend $8-10k/year with them and have yet to be flagged for anything. I forget if they have my business number or not.

I once read that in the UK, when you bought a radio or tv set, you had to pay additional fees to be able to even use it!
Not cable fees.... ownership fees, registration?
I wonder..... do they still do that insane stuff?
How about purchasing and owning a computer?
I'm not up on laws/rules in the UK.

I'm not up on the rules in the UK either, but in Denmark above is true as far as I know. You pay a media fee/licence to have devices capable of receiving "media" (radio, TV, computer, etc.) in your household. The fees fund public broadcasting. In return the public broadcaster is ad-free.

In Murica you pay every time you turn the TV on in the form of a constant bombardment with ads. The last five minutes of a movie is chopped up and spread out over an hour so the broadcaster can fit in ads. This after you pay $$$ for the fancy cable TV movie channels.

Pick your poison.

Oh I see. I did take a peek at the Reddit threads. People mention QTY 100 of things. That's pretty small potatoes even for Mouser. Which makes me think that the issue (assuming there every was an issue) was caused by some computer glitch. Or maybe Mouser was trying to prevent the grey market distributors from running away with their inventory so they could sell it back to Mouser's customers at 10x the cost.

Might all be like that (indeed assuming there ever was an issue) but still it won't concern you as you're a business user. You won't be flagged for anything and did not and will not experience issues that hobbyists did/may experience.

That is more or less correct and it pays for the BBC services. All of them. Add free and people do watch programs on them. They get better viewing figures than our commercial channels. ITV is a commercial rival with adds every 15min and every year they hope to catch up.

There is talk of changing the way it's funded and some moan about paying but I have a feeling there would be riots if it changed in some ways. Their license fee is clamped by the gov which does have effects on what they can afford to broadcast and produce. No chance of films all night etc. The clamp on the fee has already caused them to withdraw certain things. Also competition. Formulae one was broadcast live then Sky got in.

Yes. I ordered 5 sets of 150-each of the tightest tolerance, lowest tempco, low noise 805 SMD metal thin film resistors (except one set was tantalum nitride), at or near as possible to 5k ohms. Each set was from a different manufacturer. This was for evaluation of candidate resistors in a discrete resistor RTZ DSD FIRDAC. The dac uses 128 of the resistors.

Apparently they assumed nobody could use that many of the highest quality resistors of the above types that mouser carries for non-resale purposes.

Once my status was changed to 'specialty distributor,' I needed to order a small handful of CoilCraft inductors for an 11Mhz to 22MHz ultra low phase noise frequency doubler. For one of the inductors they had more than 11,000 in stock, yet they refused to sell me even one single inductor.
