Amp Power LED Gets dim

Have dixon class D car amp 4500w. Powering it external with 12v Toroidal transformer. Upon high volume 4ohm 180w pairs woffers the power led would gets in out dimm and audio like skips or clicks.
Just need to know is the power supply that is weak?

Probably.

You need a bit more than that, a bridge rectifier, smoothing etc.

Have dixon class D car amp 4500w.
Real or 'pretend' watts?

4500 watts at 12 volts DC is nearly 400 amps... so its almost certainly going to be 'pretend' watts but even so its probably more current than you realise.

It says 4500w might be max woffers load not the DC load...

More likely creative advertising tbh.

What you describe as happening does sound like the power supply voltage sagging or perhaps you are just reaching the limits of what the amp can deliver before limiting. Without detailed specs there is no way to guess.

The supply is easy to check though, the voltage going into the amp should not vary as you turn the volume up loud, it should maintain the constant 12 volt supply.

(this might be better in the car audio forum... will move it)

A toroidal transformer alone doesn't make a 12v DC power supply. It requires rectifiers and filter capacitors at the very least.

Is this a commercially produced 12v power supply that you're using to power the amp?

If so, post a link to the power supply owner's manual.

If not, post photos of the supply.

The transformer was actually in different amp that were burnt out. So the transformer is been taken out with its circuit board is been used with this amp. It has rectifier and 4x capacitors.

I would like to contact them but it seem they don't have any website etc.

I'm just going to say that I think you need to be very careful not to accidently damage the amp. That transformer looks small and the secondary wires look thin which all adds up to a low current supply.

Your amp works... its 99% sure just to be a problem with an suitable supply.

Don't use a battery charger to try and power it.

Thanks Mooly
I want to try secondary with more thicker wire but getting these in my town is way to hard. Generally what gauge wire will be suitable? Or can I double that already used wire in there but with same length for 12v if that works?

I just don't really recommend using a transformer etc for powering this. The 'VA' rating is what matters for the transformer and a high current one would be heavy, perhaps 2 to 3 kg in weight. That is not the way to do it though. A 12 volt transformer at light loading is going to give around 18 volts DC and you risk damaging the amp.

If you are just testing the amp try a 12 volt gel battery of say 7Ah or 12Ah capacity. They have tremendous current delivery ability.

Thanks guys for all the comments really appreciated
Thanks evianamp2011.... for the offer

I'm testing it with 1200w 100A multiple/single rail 12v pc psu atleast it does have voltage regulator and some ov oc protection etc. Testing it at the moment and see how the amp will perform..........
