And wouldn't driver's X-max be less of a critical issue with an array of 20-25 per side, if used at "normal" listening levels, in an "average" domestic environment? - whatever the heck either of those two actually mean.
It is cheap. I have only had the FR88ex big brother, which is OK, but behind the FF85wk and A6s in performance.

One of the issues with the Founteks that Dave describes is the very small margins for actually installing and using them.
In the case of the FE85:
magnet diameter and through hole are both 70mm (tight squeeze)
mounting screw diameter 83.5mm
outer flange 90mm
total mounting depth ~40mm
This little guy has a low enough profile stamped basket and high profile surround that surface mounting would probably be fine for projects to which a $12 driver would be employed, but if using front panel material any thicker than 1/4" by the time you chamfer the mounting hole sufficient to allow breathing room, there's not a ton of room for screws.

>>> OK i have compared tracks in your blind test. Track B wins - TC9FD
I own a few Fostex already and don't want to spend $45 for their three incher. If it cost under $20 like the Vifa I'd already have purchased it... tho I still may buy it at some point out of curiosity. Otherwise, I already have and enjoy the 168z in a large ported box all by itself. It provides a great bouncy bass, slightly forward mids and a subtle treble that some may find requires a helper tweeter. I also have Fostex 165k and 127e's in large and small sized BIBs and of course the venerable Radio Shack 40-1197 which is a Fostex 103 in disguise... it and the Vifa/Dayton are in the same league... tho the 1197 has the distinction of being more efficient. So many drivers to enjoy these days! But of all mentioned above the TC9 resolves vocal harmonies the most realistically where you feel the singers are in the room. The more expensive and refined Scan Speak must be great.

You might want to cast an eye at this, which is exactly what you are thinking about.Hi. Need 3" fullrange in 2 way, - 500-18000kHz. 12" midwoofer will be supporting it from bottom. It will be open baffle like MJK.

Follow the updated links in the first post to find the current version. It's been built many times and people are very happy with it.
I found video on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mDIcbPqTlc. I don't know nothing about Boenicke W5 but sounds good and consept - woofer+midtweeter - is similar to what i want to get. Only in open baffle 🙂
That Boenicke W5 makes use of Fountek FE85by the way.

I designed something similar to use up parts i had kicking about. put the FR on the back, woofer on the side, swoop up the angles and curves and you could clone the W5.
FR88ex + Silver Flute W14. You could substitute FE85 (or almost any 3" FR)
