4mm Bitumen Pads

Hi Everyone!

I am currently making a set of speakers and I want some 4mm Bitumen pads for the sides. Troels Gravesen recommends Harold Nyborg in Denmark but as I am in England I was hoping to locate a source over here instead. I have seen the Silent Coat ones which have an aluminium foil coating but these are not the same as the ones Troels uses from the photos on his website.

Any advice gratefully received.

Can't you just get bitumen at any home builder store? I still have a big roll of the stuff from my speaker building days. I just layered it up. Troels helped me redesign what I built too. I was just blasting Led Zep I on vinyl through them.

I have found it quite hard to get hold of in the UK, builders yards sell corigated bitumen sheet and thin butyl membrain sheet.

Some suppliers of bitumen sheet (1.5m x 1.0m) have minimum order value of £200 and then it has to be cut to size for delivery or stuck on a pallet.

I think it used as panel damping for train cariges, air condition ducts and other large machinery. Could always find somewhere local who are willing to sell off cuts or even half sheet for a few quid.

Did you double up the layers?

I believe that bitumin pannel damping (10kg/m2) is more effective when it is of similar thickness to the pannels it is damping.

I am currently building an Econowave Mini style speaker using the BBC method of cabinet construction i.e 9mm Birch ply, 10mm bitumen damping, Beech fillets with removable front/rear baffles and a 19mm roundover on the front baffle.

The Bitumen pads that I used were 4mm thick and are the ones that Troels Gravesen recommends on his website. I did think about using 3 layers of roofing felt held together with bitumen mastic but in the end I went for the pads - less mess and Troels optimised his design with this material. The walls of the speakers are curved and consist of alternate layers of 3mm MDF and 3mm Birch faced Plywood (9 layers in total).
