Doesn't look like EV to me.
Sure looks like it to me, but found nothing about it.

Hi Gearfreak and GM,
The Japanese magazine only has some English text so your guess is as good as mine.. The woofer on the floor looks like a Sunlight Engineering (California) one.. Maybe he has plans to use it for the in-ceiling bass horn?
Hello,
I started a new thread a few days ago but no answers so far so i will try it here.
For more info see my new thread.
But the main questions if i would add wings on the inner side of my ALTEC VOT would i be able to use a kind of bamboo '' curtain '' composed of one inch or a bit more diameter '' tubes '' loosely connected or would i need a real panel like a door panel.
If i would use the shape of a door panel and cover it with bamboo tubes would it be beneficial for the sound because of better diffusion??
Make the panel stop at the upper side of the bass bins or make them as high as possible?
greetings, eduard

And just FYI, the 1505 horn goes about 9" back on the Hiraga rig.
Pano, can you clarify what you mean by this? Are you suggesting that the front of the 1505B horn is recessed 9 inches from the front of the 825 bass enclosure?
Thanks & Regards,
Bruce
Let's hope Pano sees your post but I am wondering if he means that the 1505 horn projects 9" behind the cabinets when the mouth lines up with the front?
Hi Cal,
I may have jumped the gun a bit when I posed this question.
Scrolling a bit further down, Pano clarified his response. The measurement he was referring to was the distance between the front of the 825/828-series bass enclosure, and the two lower mounting ears located towards the front of the 1505-series HF horn. These ears are used to attach the horn to the L-brackets that affix the horn to the horn mounting sled.
The 9-inch measurement Pano described happens to be the identical measurement I am seeing on my 1505B horns and 828 bass enclosures.
Thanks, anyway!
Bruce

Hi GM!
Good to hear from you. It's been awhile!
Yes, I have this application note from Altec, and I've had it for quite some time.
I used the procedure Ted Uzzle described here for the time alignment of my 288H/1505B driver/horn combination, with my 828 bass enclosure. It works well.
All the Best,
Bruce

It’s the end of an era folks. As I wind down my diy side of things I have been selling off a lot of gear, the most popular of which is the Altec. Or should I say, was the Altec.
As of yesterday, the last pieces to go were the 1803 horns with the 288 drivers and the original N 500 XO’s.
Sad and happy at the same time. 😢 🙂

Damn Cal, I thought you were going to pass those on to me after your final breath. Ah well.....
Is that why they're so popular? Is it simply "lore" or "Americana" factor that fetches the big $, or is it otherwise unobtanium performance? It’s the end of an era folks.
They sounded great in 1966 at Long Point Cinema, and I never heard anything better. HS band director told us to go have a listen. I could never afford Altec when the factory operated and the nearest dealer was always 250-500 miles away. I never saw a used pair working for sale in Greensheet or Ebay.Is it simply "lore" or "Americana" factor that fetches the big $, or is it otherwise unobtanium performance?
I heard AR3, KLH5, Klipschhorn, Bose 901, before Army damaged the ears. Wrong demo tracks mostly, too easy. Simon & Garfunkle (AR,KLH), trumpet+string bass+brush jazz (klipsch), Genesis&BlackSabbath bands (Bose). Meiersound since. Ho hum. Making do with Peavey SP2(2004) which are pretty good if your hearing stops at 14000 hz.

jj,
There are a number of factors I suppose.
In their day, there was hardly an equal.
The Voice of the Theatre line was very popular, but the 1803 horn was only used in custom systems. They were more popular in stadiums, than theatres.
There are very rare.
Mine were in good condition, which for a 60 plus year old horn, is even rarer. It is sheet metal after all.
The Aquaplast damping is intact and not brittle
The 288 drivers had been up dated with an 8 ohm diaphragm and remained by none other than Great Plains.
They are highly sought after.
I priced them so they sold quickly without advertising. Many persons knew I had them and no barn to hang them in.
They would have caught 3x the price if shipped to Asia.
Their popularity is something I liken to vintage automobiles.

In my early 20's, I think I had one. My friend told me about some "free speakers" in town and when I arrived at the church parking lot, there were two multicell horns- one big, one a little smaller, plus two large wood cabs. Turned out I was a little late, as someone else had already eviscerated all the drivers. They couldnt figure out how to remove just the compression driver part, so unbolted the throat pipe at the horn on the larger one. I hung onto it for a few years, but never did anything with it. It was at a time when I was wholly unaware of the value of such things; sonically or as a collectable. Did some seriously dumb transactions back then.
Sometime in my late 20s I owned a pair of Altec Valencias, purchased in Boston via the "Want Advertizer". That was where my Altec ownership and listening experience began and ended. I vaguely remember trading those for a pair of Acoustat model 3s, the fellow sweetening the deal by including the optional tube amps in working condition. The guys in the DEC forum would later say "I see you're moving into the High End". I bought a TV CRT anode volt meter to measure the 4kV B+... Had some large oil caps sitting on the floor behind them, by passing the internal B+. Still alive? Yep. Got rid of that speaker setup when my son began toddling about.
When it comes to speakers, all sorts of eras come and go. Glad to read you gave / got a fair deal on them; someone's era has just begun.

Yes, that is the pleasing part. Often you get invited to see the new installation but I think that will be in photos only this time.
I still have these 604-8H, that I will finish off and keep, if I think I might have eyes on a new place. I believe I have posted these before.
