Since this morning, Avast! free antivirus is reporting having blocked virus infections on the DIY Audio forums: "Avast Web Shield has blocked a harmful web page or file".
"Infection blocked"

Infection URL:Mal
Firefox and IE 10 produce the same behaviour under Windows 7.
Are these false positives with Avast being over-zealous, or should I be concerned?
Thanks.

Strangely enough, the problem only existed between about 10am and 12 noon and then disappeared. It looks like I wasn't the only person to experience this. Either there was an Avast update which then ignored that specific virus signature, or the site content had changed?
But another problem occurred around lunchtime. DIYA forums would hang until content from "files.diyaudio.com" was available. Sometimes this meant waiting several minutes, making forum navigation unusable.

Strange. It does perhaps sound a bit like a false positive or a 3rd party ad maybe. If it happens again maybe copy and paste the page url here and we'll take a look.

I found Avast to be a real pain.
It reports problems on things that aren't a problem.
It also takes ages to decide if a program is a threat or not.
I also found as a software developer my new programs were rejected by Avast as threats !
I dumped it and use Norton instead.

Get rid of Avast, and install AVG (the free version). I've used this for a few years, no issues running Win7/64, and Firefox.

For firmware development, data logging and general use, I use Linux - no need for AV software 😉 Interestingly, I started with Norton many years ago on my Windows boxes and found it became too bloated and sluggish. It's probably improved since.I found Avast to be a real pain.

I switch between AVG and Avast when one becomes too annoying.Get rid of Avast, and install AVG (the free version). I've used this for a few years, no issues running Win7/64, and Firefox.

I just use Windows Defender. It never finds any problems and so I never worry 😉
(only kidding... sort of 😀)

Plugging the RJ45 network cable back in may change your opinion 😉I just use Windows Defender. It never finds any problems and so I never worry 😉

Despite most subscribed threads having been active, I have received no emails to that effect. Mac 10.7.5 + Safari 6.1.6

None received ?
Have you changed email address or anything lately ? Are your options set correctly in the user control panel to send an instant email (or whatever preference you choose) ?

AVAST, NORTON, AVG, ... best is TOTAL FREEDOM. ...Go Windows Defender.
Or go APPLE.
And get a free CIA agent, with another one from the FBI to monitor all your spies and bad apples. 🙂

That's what most say, and do use. 🙂
Or, go Apple.

Or, watch movies on TV.

There is a world of difference between the original Windows Defender as incorporated into Vista, and Windows Defender in W8.1 and W10 (preview) which are more of a full security suite (virus/malware/rootkits).
Biggest problem I found with many paid for security suites was just how much of a resource hog they were. Microsofts free "Security Essentials" is lightweight and a good choice for earlier operating systems. With W8 and W10 I'm happy with the revamped "Defender", which is security essentials under another name and built in.

Question: Where do viruses come from? ...Can people give a virus to other people? If yes, how?
And, can you trace the source of a virus and give it back to its original owner?
Are we truly fully balanced protected? ...Do the forces that might be have access to our coordinates through smart phones, iPads, tablets, laptops, PCs and Macs?
Drones, they are powerful spy tools. The more the technology advance the more vulnerable we become.
Edward Snowden; does he enjoy his new country, Russia?
What are the best things in high tech today; for the good of humanity, without flaws?
And what are the worst ones?

If you use Windows 8 apps then you get a lot more protection from viruses.
Windows 8 apps are tied down and limited in what they can do.
