Hi,
Has anyone tried to build a Bazz Fuss ? I've built one yesterday but, as I didn't have the exact parts I've used what I had.
Instead of of a 2N5088 transistor I've used a 2N2222A and instead of a 1N914 diode, I've used a 1N4001.
I can't say that the sound is totally crap, but it is not very good either. It's way too dark (good for metal) and when the note is decaying and reaches low volume, it just cuts suddenly the sound (like when using a noise gate).
The dark sound should be due to the caps (I have to lower their value), but regarding the note decay could this be either the diode or transistor?
If you don't know what a Bazz Fuss is, please check here:

Cheers,
Pedro

You are in the wrong place. A Bazz Fuss is blasphemous to most audio people. You want a guitar pedal forum.

I have the dim impression that the BF wants a Darlington, not a straight transistor; but it is not my cup of tea.
I've built several, most of them in some rather creative boxes.
They can sound good but they are a bit picky when on component values. PRR is right about the Darlington.
The dark sound can be cured by using a smaller input cap, and they can be changed from fuzz to distortion to overdrive by adding a resistor from emitter to ground, ranging almost 0 to several kohms.
You can also add a small decoupling cap across the emitter resistor to get kind of an old trash metal sound.
Different diodes makes different sound too, I seem to rememember I got the best fuzz sound with 2 1N4148s in series. LEDs give a softer clipping.

Well, it has both versions single transistor and Darlington. As I didn't have a Darlington at home I've just used what I had.I have the dim impression that the BF wants a Darlington, not a straight transistor; but it is not my cup of tea.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
The caps I have are already small (I think). I am using 100nF caps but can try 22nF and 10nF.
My circuit has 1kΩ in the emitter.
Regarding the diodes, I will buy 1N4148 as suggested. I have transparent green LEDs but didn't try them.
I will have some fun with that tomorrow. 🙂
Kind regards,
Pedro
