BD or TIP, TIP or BD?

Which & why?
Was BD introduced keeping audio in mind?
Made both of them
BD wins my heart, listening one Class A with BD677
Don't know if high beta (750) has any role
Does high beta play any role?
😎

All prefixes mentioned are code of various manufacturers, covering a broad range of parts. Different parts for different applications. What are you looking for? Greg Ersine has a website with lists of parts suitable for vaious applications. Driver Transistors
I belive BD was Phillips, but they have abandoned the market. TIP was Texas Instruments, they don't make many of these anymore. TIP3055 in 1970 was faster & better sounding as output transistors than RCA 2n3055, TIP41 is a slow 3 mhz driver which in my circuit is not ideal.
MJE is a series of drivers from ON, mostly pretty fast except 340/350 which is undefined Ft.
As long as transistor has enough gain & speed, manufacturer doesn't matter much. Except copies which even ones with published specs don't meet or even list Ft or soa specifications. Storefront clones, ebay, alibaba, who knoze, may not even feet Vceo spec. (a good test for counterfeits).

Many thanks, Indianajo

this is what I am looking for
Some comparative leeway historically to get the best from new or salvaging
BD wins my heart anyday over Tip, the sound is just a fine balance between Mosfet and Transistor
Made a latest class A emitter follower with just 5v supply, with BD677, plus Alnico drivers, the sound is awesome bobmarley piece in one of the above listed instagrm link
Mosfets sounds tubey and alnico sounds tubey too..so two wide bass heavy elements may not be always welcomed, ok with string instrumentals but not heavy deep vocals.. particularly Indian classical as they are
That bd677 did perfect job..is it because of so much gain, beta / hfe is 750, higher than tip darlington 142? Could be
Pity philips left small segment market. in India, till fifteen years back, electronics meant Philips )
I rely on ST stuff, design superstition about anything Italian ) but they always prove their pedigree
What were the golden days of electronic design? Will look for remnants
Great to get some wisdom from cherishing perspective

Originally, as in around 50 years ago, The BD series power transistors were developed by several competing European manufacturers including Telefunken, Siemens, SGS Thomson and Philips. They were both metal cased and plastic (epoxy) construction. The TIP and MJE series components were manufactured respectively by Texas Instruments and Motorola(On Semi) in the US and all were low-cost, plastic construction.

Really, the plastic parts were not of any special quality, just cheaper to produce and assemble into finished goods than the metal cased originals that they were replacing. Today, similar parts to those originals may still be branded the same by their original manufacturers but will be produced in the cheapest possible semiconductor plants globally - most likely in China or surrounding Asian countries.

Always consider that when we praise some parts as sounding nicer than others in audio products, we are really comparing the distortion they produce when used in a particular circuit, product etc. What we hear may be more pleasing to us but this could and often does mean a worse or mismatched component rather than a technically better one 😱
