Beginner REW / Volumio advice please

I think I might be being a little dim here.
Or i have missed an obvious point.

I think that maybe I have confused myself reading bits and bobs.
I think this might be more of a Volumio question.

I have been dabbling with my source and PSUs.

I am using a USBridge Sig and Volumio.
Just bodged together a 'Fast, fun inexpensive OB project'.
Pretty pleased.

My next thought wandered to my room and picked up a Umik-1 and downloaded REW to my laptop.

I have loads of questions, but am kind of stuck on step 1.
'Connect to your system'.

I can play an audible sweep by just plumbing the 3.5mm output of the laptop through my amp.
I can record and see the graphs produced and am looking forward to learning what it shows.

Am I right in thinking that this is good enough for room treatment?
I am not looking to do anything major, I am just curious to see if I have any major issues.

However, am I right in thinking that i can use this now to listen to my speaker output and/or my system output to see where I am at?
In which case, I am thinking that i need to put digital signal into the USBridge sig so it gets the whole system, using the DACs and PSUs etc.
In other words, I am thinking that i want to make my laptop and REW a digital source for Volumio?
Probably via USB?

I generally stream over the internet or access a separate source via LAN or use a USB stick as a source.
But I can't find how to use a laptop (or, out of interest, a phone?) as a USB source.
I have tried fiddling with Volumio, but I haven't done the right thing yet.

Am I thinking right or have I got this wrong?

After the above, my next bit is that I can't access all of the settings like any walkthroughs show, but am wondering if they might show after i manage to connect properly.
Currently, step 3 is 'set output on laptop to 48kHz' I am using a Linux OS on it and it doesn't seem to have that option that I can find.

Thanks.

I am not sure I can parse your post corrctly.
But I would suggest to crack open the REW user guide, there is a step by step guide how/where to connect the system up.
Basically you connect the UMIK to the PC/laptop, and set the Preferences tab in REW to select it as an input.
The output of your laptop/PC goes to the DAC of your system so REW can play sound and pick it up on the UMIK.
You can also use the analog (headphone) output of your PC to play the REW files through your system, in that case you set the REW Preferences to play through the onboard DAC.
You really should work through the user guide, otherwise it is easy to go around in circles for days.
Assume English is your language and/or you are familiar with the lingo.

Yes, I have read the first part, well, I have read a couple of different first parts.
Both of which I thought were on REW page, but I can't find one of them now.
One says I can connect to my system using USB or the 3.5mm jack.
I can make it sweep using anaologue route (3.5mm jack), but that only uses the amp.
I can record this no problem.

I am asking if I should be connecting the pc as a source so that the whole system can be looked at.
In which case, it would be digital in, right?
Which would mean USB. No?
Or is that not what one does and I have misunderstood that bit?

Are you saying that it only goes in just before tha DAC? As in it skips the USBridge sig, Pi and reclocker?
I would have thought I want it to go into the system at the start, no? To assess it all?

The diagram under 'getting started' shows it going 'line out' from the pc. I don't know if that is analogue or digital.
It then shows it going into the processor of the receiver before it goes to the amplifier.
Is my version of the receiver's processor the USBridge sig?

My 'system' goes USBridge Sig>Ian Canada FifoPi with Accusilicon clocks>U.Fl>Abraxalito's Kubelik DAC>Volume pot>Amp>speakers.

Separate issues are that when I followed the steps, in step three (and videos I watched) the options that they were saying to do were not even available on my laptop when it said to set the laptop.
There were settings that it said to do that were not available to me with REW open.
I am assuming it is because I have not got step one right.
Hence trying to understand step one.

I am going to reinstall it, I just tried to update it again and it is saying there are errors.

In the basic it is extremely simpel: REW needs to be able to read the mic, obviously. So that has to be connected to the PC that runs REW, and the REW Preferences should be set to select that mic.
On the output side, REW must be able to sned a signal from the PC all the way to the speakers so it can send out a test signal that can be picked up by the mic.
So pretty much anything goes, from the PC headphone analog to your power amp, or digital from the PC USB to the streamer USB hence on to the DAC and the power amps.
Just make a drawing, that will help to make it all fall into place.
Exactly all those options make it confusing, but by looking at what gets the signal to the speakers, it can help to make it clearer.
And don't forget to set the REW Preferences correctly!

I remember when I first started to use REW, I had exactly the same questions as you have. But there's a solution and you will find it!

PS When re-installing, first de-install then re-start the PC, then re-install.

OK, thanks. So, if anything goes. Great.
Just I can't work out how to get volumio to see the USB from the laptop. Seems like USB lead from laptop to USBridge.
But it doesn't show in Volumio.

I can't make the REW preferences work like the guides.
They don't show the same. Nothing shows the same in the drop downs.

I am trying to uninstall now, but can't find it in pamac to uninstall it.
Don't suppose you know what it is called do you?
It doesn't show as anything starting with R.

I was trying to make the laptop produce the sweep and put that through the system.
I can't work out how to do that.
Which is a shame as I would like to help some friends with my laptop and mic.

I have found that Volumio FusionDSP plugin will produce a sweep and pink nose.
That will do for now.

I would like to work out how to plug in my laptop with REW in to produce the sweeps as there are so many options,
But maybe that is not how it is meant to be.

Ah, I don't know.
No, I imagine is the answer. It being a laptop.
I did wonder that at the beginning but couldn't find anything mentioning that.
I can acheive sweeps via 3.5mm jack (analogue wise).
Are you saying that I need to use a pc with a half decent sound card as opposed to a laptop?
A sound card with a digital output?
Would my volumio USBridge recognise that then?

These days, a "sound card" may be a USB device. Search for "USB sound card" on the Web. Examples include Focusrite, Behringer, and others. They are stand-alone boxes which connect to your computer's (laptop) USB port.

These "cards" include both ADC and DAC. REW uses the DAC to generate output to your device under test and the ADC converts the output of your device for REW to analyze.

You do not need Volumio or USBridge unless you are testing their outputs. REW and the sound card does all the work.

Ah, hah.
I see. That is the key bit I am missing, thanks.
I have seen 'audio interface' as well.
I didn't realise that was a specific item. I just thought it was a phrase.

Thanks so much.
So, you can test each sector of tyour system, depending where you put the input into.
Yes, I kept mentioning the USBridge because I am thinking I want to test my whole system.
However, looks like it is not meant for that.
Just to test your amp and speakers.
Well, that is the only RCA part I have anyway.

However, I have also been advised that I can create and save the sweeps that I like and hence play them from a USB stick for example.
So, create the sweep I want, save to USB stick.

Also, the FusionDSP plugin in Volumio has a sweep and pink noise files.
Thank you for your help, I suspect it will start to become clearer once I have a sound card or audio interface.
I suspect some more settings will become available.

Then i can start having some fun.
(probably plenty of confusion, but fun)

Once you get your sound card, you can try things out and you will learn a lot. It's amazing what is possible now with computers and software compared to not that long ago when tens of thousands of dollars of equipment were required to do the same thing.

One thing that would be nice to have when testing amplifiers is a voltage divider / limiter to scale down the input to the sound card. This protects the sound card from over-voltage.

If you search the Web for "Aktika attenuator", you can find the plans for an easy-to-build attenuator. I built one and use it when testing my amplifiers.

For amplifier testing, it is also useful to have a good AC voltmeter or oscilloscope to measure the actual output of the amp before it goes through the attenuator.

So I had REW 5.10.x so I uninstalled that and got the latest which is 5.20.13.
The button that the video uses is still not available (“Cross Cor Align” for those following the video)
I then checked the avnirvana page for beta releases of REW and the most recent release is 2021.

So no idea how to follow along with the steps in the video above. He is using some mystery version.
