best tweeters under $200?

Thanks Keyser. Its for a good friend who wants a 3 way set of speakers he can use domestically and as studio back wall monitors, plus he likes dubstep, hence the need for power. I've seen some dynaudio's on ebay and I'm looking at the morel Rohacells for mids. Maybe a pair per side of HiVi W10s for bass duties. I'm aware there are some great tweeters at cheaper prices like the tang band ceramic domes but not sure if they will handle the power, so if you have any ideas it would be much appreciated!

If price really isn't very much of an issue, I'd try the Seas Millennium. Very nice frequency response, good dispersion and great power handling! The Scanspeak 6600 is nice too. I wouldn't use the Accutons - the frequency response could be flatter and smoother. Another option is to simply cross a little higher - depending on what mid you're using. But really, most modern domes have decent efficiency and aren't destroyed that easily.

Yes, I've 'heard' both the nipples and the pointy ones, and they're both very good. The Scanspeak goes louder, but is also several times as expensive. Ultimately it is the total design that makes or breaks the sound of an individual driver. More often than not, the recipe is more important than the quality of the ingredients, provided the ingredients meet some reasonable quality criteria.

Interesting, wd never have considered one of those planar tweeters; will they be ok in a high power studio rig..could I use a pair per side or is that a no no?

I realise is that the power rating of tweeters is a bit misleading. I heard many recommending this Usher model and saying they are fantastic, go very loud, even tho they are rated at just 15 watts!

This old JBL slot design gets bashed for "diffraction".
All I care is these sound great, everywhere in the room.

Its a far bigger device than it appears in the picture,
but not heavy that you'd start wishing for neodymium.
Strong plastic body forgives some of the magnet weight.

This mentions some cavity to stuff with plumbers putty?

The Neopro5i is a $300 tweeter though.

FWIW,
I use the Neopro5i with a PHL 1120 Mid range driver to make for a very good speaker. I fill out the bass with a TD12S woofer from AE speakers.

Curt C. from HTGuide.com has built passive XOs for that design (same designer of the Tritrix and other great DIY designs,etc)

Ever had a look at the large active main monitors by ATC, Quested Audio, PMC or Klein+Hummel (Neumann)?
Domes all 'round, more than enough power and when it comes to studio monitors these 4 are probably as good as it gets.
Btw two of these use ATC mids, two use Volt mids and two use Volt woofers.
ATC has been known to use Vifa silk domes and Quested use Morel domes I think.
DynaudioAcoustics, Genelec and Barefoot also use domes.

You have to define "High Powered", To me that is > 200Watts. I never heard 100Watts or less being classed as a high power requirement.

I do not know of a dome that can handle what I define as high power. No arguement with studio monitors having dome tweeters but how much power are they really getting?

High Power handling or High SPL are two things that are beyond Dome designs, its a reason no high demand system uses a dome tweeter.

ATC use 850w/ch for their big monitors (split 275x2 for woofers, 200 mids, 100 tweeter),
PMC use 1300w/ch (800, 250, 250) or 2100 with the extra sub,
k+h(Neumann) use 920w/ch (400, 230, 290).
Roger Quested goes a bit further with his largest, the HM415: Total 3200w (1850, 450, 450, 450) for a peak SPL of 138dB.

Pretty sure most of his 8" and up bass drivers these days are Volt.
Certainly the big ones, it is hard to mistake Volt radials for anything else.
I've been told by what I thought to be a reliable source that the 3" mid domes are Volt too but they relatively new, especially compared to ATCs.
The amps are all MC2 Audio and a very good choice that is too!

Going just by the looks it seems ATC is using Scanspeak Discovery tweeters now. D2604/833000 and D2606/922000 I guess. That would be under £40each! Seems there is need to spend hundreds on tweeters to get (close to) the best.
They used to use Vifa D27TG at least on some models but it seems they are not being made anymore.

Yes, its all coming back, I think I remember Volts sitting around waiting to go in the cabs. The cabs I made were the smaller studio monitors. i think the Morels were 6" or thereabouts. This was a v long time ago i must add, early 90s (spotty teenager)

Seems some of the expensive speakers use quite cheap tweeters and mids, usually they 'modify' them to justify the price.
