Check out this new HIFI restaurant I found

Took the wife to dinner tonight to Parachute HiFi. New place they opened up here in Chicago about 10 minutes away from our place.

I guess this guy's other restaurant is a 3 star Michelin joint. Prices weren't too bad.

It seems he likes hifi. Specifically this Adire brand. There was some smaller stuff on the back wall. A lot of those was that same brand. Only these two big ones were playing of course. They hit pretty low. Rolloff seems to be around 38 Hz. The highs were quite crisp. I assume there's a compression driver behind those interesting looking horns. Midbass was oddly not so great.

The Mcintosh units there are way out of my price range so I know little about those.

Decent vinyl collection here as well.

Anyways, was pretty interesting so I thought I'd share it. You can check out the pictures for yourself.

Nice that good HiFi is used. Normally good audio let alone good music are not on the menu.

Shocking to find out that there are really 1547 Michelin (not McMichelin) rated restaurants in the USA of which 14 are 3 star rated.

There's a record listening bar here in Perth called Astral Weeks. They have Line Magnetic LM-812 speakers powered by Line Magnetic AS-128 mono block valve amplifiers.

They have recently opened a restaurant behind it (called Ah Um) which also has a pretty decent sound system; however I can't find pics at present. The speakers are from Translate Sound in Sydney, but other than that I know little.

Ah Um's quieter than the bar soundtrack is from Astral Weeks' own digital 'radio station': https://aw-radio.com.au/

A bit more info: https://perthisok.com/eat-drink/ah-um-astral-weeks-northbridge/

We don't need no stinkin' foo foo Michelin to rate our restaurants in the US.

We got Goodyear to rate our steak houses, Bridgestone to do the Japanese places and Road Handler for fast food.

Did you know that In'N'Out got ten Road Handler stars and three from Goodyear? I hear they're gonna introduce a tonkatsu sandwich in SoCal that got a preliminary eight stars from Bridgestone.

BTW, I don't like loud places when I go out. But then, I don't play our stereos very loud either. IMHO, when we got out to eat and drink all I need is a little bit of background white noise so the place is not.. silent.... otherwise it's a social thing and we talk and eat... no need to have some guy pushed his taste in music on us..

A lot of these places place a premium on LOOKS: form over function.

In reality, a nice Tidal subscription, a chromebook, a nice little DAC/preamp, a Purify Amp and some solid modern speakers will sound far, FAR better. But that's when you place function over form. Heck, I dare say self powered Genelecs would be perfect in such places.

^ When we go to the Phoenix Club in Anaheim for their annual Sunday OktoberFest... do you think we care about Michelin Stars as I drink beer, on a Sunday, before noon?

Nope... beer and meat and sausage and more beer and more meat and more sausage and maybe a little salad and more beer.... repeat and rinse...

The only time in the whole year when I drink before noon... On a Sunday no less. God Forgive Us... but pass another liter of that Bitburger, will ya?

Oh, they don't have no stinking McIntosh stuff, and their PA is not very big or impressive. Mostly a couple of mikes and a couple of black carpeted boxes for the announcer. When they bring out the bands, they don't need no stinkin' PA, they are LOUD. And they go great with... beer and meat and sausage....

Did you know that Northern Mexican bands play very much like German bands. I guess it's because of the large influx of Germans into Texas in the late 1800s.

And Northern Mexican Band music goes great too with... beer, and meat and sausage. ;-D

Over the lips, through the gums, look out stomach, here it comes! Prosit!

Few people in Australia would even notice a DJ's hairstyle, let alone care. Yes the photos were during Covid.

The bar is not all for show. The owner is a jazz guitarist and loves music. They hosted a renowned jazz trio there last weekend.

The whole point is that you go there to listen to the music and have a drink. Note that the restaurant next door has it's own soundtrack, so the music in the bar can't be that loud.

To put it another way; would you go to a bar specifically to listen to self powered Genelecs?

At least it's different and I reckon we should encourage such ventures!

Having heard the speakers in the Astral Weeks bar (Line Magnetics) many times and Ah Um restaurant (Custom Translate Sound) a little, I can say they're a very different experience from each other, very different approach/technology (as Stuey said, a very different soundtrack in each) and both sound fantastic IMO. If you're ever in Perth I'd recommend a visit to either even just to pop in, though they're hard to find. The bar is more social and lively, the restaurant is probably closer to the owner's original vision of pure listening in a very intimate and subdued setting (with delicious food). The staff and DJs are all music obsessives from all walks of life, whether it's your walk of life or not.

(caveat: I'm also biased as I am friends with the ownership/staff)

edit to add photos of the restaurant speakers for those interested
