Might I remind you, I'm now retired, and have all the necessary equipment I'll ever need these days.If 400$ is expensive, you should stop building tube amplifiers 🙂 I could schitt 400$ with DIY these days.
As for cost, it's not a big priority for me to have something like that.
I did my duty for decades, hustling around the service shop.
Over it.
+10 on keeping the Hakko cleaned: It's not hard to do, but do it frequently Empty it of solder as needed and run the cleaning wire down the opening often.

But there is a trick ..... do not squeeze the rubber bulb for no reason .... squeeze the bulb once & hold it ! apply desoldering iron until solder is melted then realease the bulb ... ... & .... clean the tip frequently ... and swith off after use ....
Congratulations! I wonder how I ever got along with out it each time i use it - which is often.

Also, I agree on needing the rain; I gather you are near Atlanta - I'm in NE Alabama and I, and especially my yard, feel your pain.I brought a Hakko FR-301 in the end, and it's a gem of a piece of kit. Love it
