I'm not familiar with what 'foam core' is / means?

could I use MDF for the LS3/5A?

Foam core is paper faced foam board used for posters and art. It can be cut with a razor.

Yes, MDF can work but screws won’t work as well on it for the baffle. I would suggest the baffle be made of plywood or solid wood and not MDF.

PVC Foam board, and Wood Polymer Composite boards are also made.
Check around, on casual inspection the foam board is less resonant.
Advantage also of no paint or termites...
