DIY Cables - Sourcing True OCC Copper Wire

After a few bad experiences with poorly constructed cables, I am now in the process of putting together my own cables of all sorts; interconnects, speaker cable, phono leads, you name it. I believe that smart geometries, rock-solid physical connections, and high quality materials are of the utmost importance.

That being said, I am looking to source highly pure copper wire fabricated using the Ohno Continuous Casting (OCC) process, as I believe the theory behind single crystal structure is sound (pun intended).

The issue is that there is no easy way to verify that copper is ultra pure, or even cast using the OCC process. The best bet is to find a good trusted source.

Any help is truly appreciated.

A thread about cables ... it should end well 🙂
I know, right??

In an ideal world, people will either answer with helpful suggestions, or “I don’t know.”

Since this is not an ideal world, I do plan on catching some flak! However, I don’t plan on responding to off-topic responses, i.e. anything that doesn’t address how to source good quality OCC wire.

Just Googled Oxygen Free Wire & several offers came up. Even at Amazon.
On the other hand if it will be used with speakers, keep in mind the speaker VC has resistance.
And is part of the series DCR of the cct. Oxygen Free Cable will barely move the needle in that application.
Except perhaps for those with Bats Ears, Or an overactive imagination.

Already a naysayer.

I think Michael Percy Audio sells lots of different OC copper wire of various purities and types. You can go nuts chasing the purest copper but there are diminishing returns after 4N and the price gets ugly too. I just use mil spec Teflon jacketed, silver plated copper wire that I get from Apex Jr on the auction site. He’s got lots of varieties from solid to ultrastranded of many gauges. It’s relatively cheap too. I do a simple braid a La Kimber PBJ on my interconnects. I use silver RCA jacks and connectors. Rhodium plating keeps them from oxidation but if there is a tight oxygen free connection you don’t need it.

I ordered some Mogami to make 4x conductors. W3104, The price was right and it works well. Those are just my 2 bits on wire $00.2 🙂. I have some garden hose size Monster wire but its not sensible cost wise. However they are well insulated and sound good. And some solstice 8 that sounds purdy good too. It supposedly has genuine silver strand under the jacket. Dollar for a buck the Mogami is tough to beat (even compared to brands that carry higher costs).

Ever notice how much we advertise for others?..and don't even get paid a premium percentage.. shakes fist at them.

Yes, there are some really poor cables. RCA's that don't fit, cheap cables with less than 99% shielding, super stiff, poor terminations, and all the fancy things they do to make one think they are special, often extremes in C or L so they can degrade the sound and the salesman convince you because there is a difference, it must be better.

So, to source Source mono-crystal OCC cryo cable, you first need to drink a quart of Kool-Aid. Snake oil flavor.

Amazon sells perfectly good cables under the Worlds Best brand. You can always go to Blue Jean if you really do not understand physics and want to believe there is a difference. BJ does have real engineers and they source known wire sources. Often Belden.

Sit back and think about the signal path from microphone to your speakers. Just think a little. Then use all the money you were going to throw away on someone else's boat payment and go listen to some live music.

Was,
I am a big fan of business. Honest business. I do not mind recommending honest fair products. I also do not mind stomping on bad products, poor service and down right fraud. My hope is the "good" guys will still be there when I need them next and the bad guys will go away. I did buy a car once and put in the contract, no dealer plack or license frames. Picked it up and their they were. They said they could not remove the plack. So I said, you have breached the contract, would you like to pau me a monthly fee to advertise for you? Amazing how they produced a heat gun and was able to get the stupid thing off.

Try the brands the pros use. Belden, Canare, Mogami companies.

This wire used to be cheap and available. Now it's expensive and hard to find.
I look for wire at: https://vhaudio.com/, https://www.partsconnexion.com/, and http://soniccraft.com/ . If you are looking for the ceramic coated bare wire, that will be hard to find since Vampire closed shop awhile ago.

Thats very smart. Its impossible to underestimate the IQ of the average troll and the effort they will go to entertain us with their stupidity.

Sonic Craft carries Neotech which is UP-OCC. Pretty spendy so I use it sparringly, mostly for interconnects and chassis wire. For speaker cables I use Dayton unrolled 16awg foil inductors, insulated with packing tapes. They sound really good for not much money.

A few years back there was an Ebay seller from Taiwan selling genuine OCC in both copper and silver. Not sure if he's still active.

For the record practically all wires i use are copper OCC. Various sources but mostly solid core hook up wire from Neotech.

Debatable even back then:

"Black List: Please noted that any products purchased through ebay (the seller is Tzeng Albert), yahoo auction, taobao.com or any other auction sites are not covered under our warranty."

Ebay is definitely not recommended now.

You must like it Cu OCC. What do you hear?
