DIY Walsh driver revisited

Some added blather from the afflicted...

*G* Well, they certainly won't win any awards in the 'how to' category, but they might be a sleep aid. But I did think at least documenting my approach to a DIY Walsh that's generally proved successful might help another to do so. Granted, there's doubtless other ways to 'get there'; since I have our business' shop and it's tools I've moved on to more involved PVC bases/surrounds that are larger, those notes could use a second chapter. Or at least a revision...

PVC toilet flanges larger than 4" don't exist. Larger parts could be utilized, but they get pricey. And to adapt them likely could be as problematic as making one's own. Which is what I did and will pursue with my next variation(s)...

One immediate note I'd add to the 'notes' would be to shim the voice coil during 'surgery' on the selected 'candidate' speaker. I'm using a Rolodex card cut into 4 thin strips inserted into the gap around the inside of the voice coil, although any stiff paper or card stock would suffice. Maintains the tolerance, and will keep the vc properly centered. I discovered that the hard way.

Best time to shim is early in the 'surgical process'; cut the dust cap off first, shim, then proceed to cut the cone away. In this way you utilize the existing alignment of the cone, spider, and voice coil to the magnet to keep the voice coil in it's 'sweet spot' with regard to it's intended original design and motion. At least it can't hurt to do so, and it's real simple. *S*

To keep crud out of the exposed vc interior, I stuff a cotton ball into it. Real 'high tech'. *L* I leave it and the shims in place until after the new cone is glued up to the vc and the surround, and use a long forceps to extract them.

(I've collected so many odd little tools and such that I kid people that I can fix anything but a broken heart...and that's because those afflicted such won't let me near them with a knife. And that's probably a good thing...*L*)

Frasier Valley, eh? Beautiful there...spouse and self drove through there on Can 1 on the way to Kamloops and Banff a long time ago. I trust y'all have tried to keep it tidy. *S* I've been up to the Great White North 5x in this existence, and it's always been a pleasure to be amongst y'all and your lovely country. Wouldn't mind seeing it again...

Have purchased and have begun carving up speakers for the next iteration (V.4) of DIY Walsh. The materials for a variation of cone construction are also in hand, so that'll take up some not so spare time for awhile.

I guess I should start taking pictures again...document this descent into madness....*G*

Surgery complete...4 'midwoofers', 4 tweeters. Took photos of the process for both; will post them to YouTube as slide shows later for reference by the curious...

The cones on the midwoofs were 37 mils thick...as big as the new cones will be, the weight (7~8 grams, roughly) of the old ones seemed pretty substantial for a 6". We'll see what the revised new ones are in contrast. But as beefy as these drivers are, they should be able to shoulder some additional weight.

Looking for donors...

I need some time to start my project...doing house reno's at the moment...got the family room floor in...now the steps next! Picked up a Philips 7" sub ( $4.00)....gotta gather up the parts now! Found a 10" mystery box speaker, at a thrift store for $5.00..thick vintage grill cloth...Opened it up...it was a sweet vintage 10" Pioneer Pax25B...2-way...NOT a Donor!!....looking for another!

...and that search for the 2nd one will likely take some time. *G* I scored a pair of Utah D12P 12" with the matching H-068 horns at my local Habitat 4 Humanity (1/4 mi. away...wayyy too convenient) in 'home brew' enclosures for 20$ awhile ago. The woofs are still waiting for new cones 'n dust caps, but they're prepped and ready for that routine. Somehow the voice coils on all have survived whomever and whatever circumstance they've been through...

And I'm hip to that 'real life' stuff getting in the way of more 'Serious Pursuits'. I mean, floors and steps getting precedence before modding speakers? How banal...*L*

BTB, here's a link to cone diagramming that's stone simple...and it's even in mm vs. in.

Flat Cone Template Calculator

I've been using a cone angle of approx. 75 degrees...as the original patent drawings vary betwixt them re this angle and you'll like have a slight variation after all is said and done, it doesn't seem to effect the outcome noticeably.

Picked up 50# of Hydrocal casting plaster the other day. I want to make a set of positive and negative forms of my cone profiles to see which will be better for shaping and gluing the cones up. This plaster's got a compressive strength of 10K lbs., so it ought to survive a reasonable amount of abuse. Hoping to fab up the forms over the weekend and 'get'r dun', as the stuff will take awhile to fully air dry out. Putting it into the oven to 'push it along' is verboten, and not recommended anyway by the mfr. Don't want the Sunday casserole to taste like plaster...

...esp. since spouse is heavily into 'food porn' of late...I want to 'Beat Bobby Flay' with a bat, as the guy's starting to 'iss me off. *L*

Hand him an aardvark..."Here, cook This, smart az..." MF'er would probably do it, and make the judge's roll their eyes... "Taste's like chicken! So delicious!"

Oh, shut up. You can make dirt taste like chicken. WE probably taste like chicken....

I'm waiting for a parody food show for cannibals. NOW, That I'll watch. Even 'Cutthroat Kitchen' is starting to get stale.... I'm waiting for the celeb judge to take 'the bite' and puke on camera. That would be Priceless...*smirk*

Don't you mean 'Chump Roast'? *L*

As for 'Bronco Burgers'...Neighboring biz does ice sculptures, yesterday's paper had a pic of a mountain lion gnawing on sculp of a bronco. Seems the local Nature Center has bet going with the Denver Zoo. Loser wears the other's jersey for a day.

Other bets: Since New Belgium is just about to open it's new eastern brewery here, there's a bet going on 'twixt 'us' and their Denver home base. They'd win BBQ sauce, likely from 12 Bones (Obama's fav when he's been here 2X), we'd win peppers (apparently the 'hot thang' {no pun intended, really} in Denver).

The Panthers are favored by 10 pts. We'll watch the commercials and the Puppy Bowl (AVL has 3 entrants...NC's on a roll). Ev intends to 'fry everything'...chicken wings & kale (fried kale was a big surprise...deep fry in a wok...it shrinks to nearly nothing but these addictive little crispy bits that're likely worse than for you than fried anything else *L*).

I'm going to write to the Food Channel and pitch my 'concept'. They could do worse, and I think it could send their ratings ballistic. *G*

Trump & Palin.....T&P....TP....*and J steps Away from the political quicksand...* ;)

Back to topic...nice 'n safe. *G*

mmmmystery boxes...Yeah, even if the drivers were poop, you could have replaced them with something better and restored the cabs. Solid walnut could've stood that... There's always the ones that get away. A nice pair of Infinity's showed up @ Habitat for a reasonable price, but I passed on them. They didn't fit into my nefarious plans. *L*

Other than my Walsh activities, I'd like to revise my 'conventional' set of speakers into something more to my liking. Let a pair of Kenwoods and Polks go, and concentrate on the mid to lower bass. I've a pair of AMT Heils that need to keep better company...*S*

I've enough audio projects ongoing at this time...I don't feel the urge to add anything else for awhile.
