Okay so I just bought a Sure Electronics amp off ebay to use in the car, and I'm wondering if connecting it to 12VDC power from the car will greatly reduce power output. Should I wire it directly or would I get better results using a 12VDC to 24VDC step up converter?
A higher power supply voltage will allow higher maximum power output.
Doubling the voltage from 12V to 24V could quadruple the maximum power output,
provided the amplifier can also supply the higher current needed for the higher power
to the load. This is because power = (V x V / R), and (2V x 2V /R) is four times larger.

V squared by R, so yeah it'll go down by a lot. This is why most car amps have inverters as part of the power supply. Get one to get your supply back up to 24V for full power capability of this amp. I'm sure ebay has it.
Yeah I found one on Amazon for $20 I just wanted to make sure it was necessary. I thought perhaps something in the nature of class D made it not. I don't fully understand how they work yet.
Just read the whole article. Very informative, very different than what I thought. I had read somewhere that a class D amp was just a class AB that used a switching power supply, not true at all. Thank you, I need to check Wikipeadia more often.
