Exploring Purifi Woofer Speaker Builds

IMG_3436.jpeg

I was fortunate to hear the SPK16 at the Time House gathering and hear Bruno briefly explain the research Purifi conducted. Stunning small speakers but even more amazing were the SPK16. Amazing like there was no speaker at all but an orchestra in the room even though I was not in the sweet spot. Driven by the new 1ET9040 modules and a Mola Mola Makua/Tambaqui I was wondering how I arrived there enjoying it so much when I used to be a SE/Fulrange crusader…

Nothing short of stunning!

Guys, please make it possible for the DIY crowd to be able to build the SPK16, please!

Well, he was trying to avoid saying too much at that moment but from everything I have seen from these people, all the care that they have shown for the DIY crowd and the support they provide - if there is anything to be worth releassing to the public it will be released.

I felt such a profound difference between the knowledgeable, humble, smart and willing to do things right Purifi people and the preposterous High end show where most of the manufacturers think that aluminium and a good paintwork is enought to elevate their devices to high end status but actually sound like crap that I felt sad, really sad. Because I am on the consumer side of things and I have no way of really knowing what is right and what is wrong. But my day job is all about working with people and I do have a pretty good understanding of what drives people. And I feel in safe hands here, enough for me.

Again, thanks for returning faith in good engineering and honest people, I needed that.

For comparison the SEAS Millennium, the original high excursion 1” dome tweeter with 0.5mm x-max, that the late Siegfried Linkwitz chose to drive down 1.44Khz in his Orion, could “only” do 100dB @1m; (excursion limited)

With 33mm dome and 1mm excursion, can the PTT tweeter have a dynamic range o 110dB for f> 1.5KHz @1m?

the WG adds gain around 2k (narrows the beam) which drops towards 20k where the beam is widened. Max SPL depends on the WG configuration. We had a visitor who insisted on playing much louder than we normally do. We then played Dance Macabre at conductor overhead position level SPL (which is surpringly loud). The 6.5 woofers were beginning to approach their max (keep in mind that F3 is at 32.5Hz) but the tweeter just went on and on

Alan March premiered a PTT8.0X0 design, albeit with SB Acoustics' SBTW29BNGW at the recent Australian Hi-FI Show held in Sydney

IIRC Alan used to hang around here as user BE718, (obviously a fan of the Usher BE718 speaker) but now he's started his own company, is he still around? Shout out and good luck Alan! Good on ya mate!
Yep, I'm still here 😀

I’d really like to know the dynamic range, power handling and max SPL (unless I just missed it). I love all of these designs I just have a difficult time conceiving of how I could power most of them.
Several posts back a graph was posted showing the -technical- max spl of given size purifi drivers. Should give you an indication. Just calc the needed amplifier power and you have it.
Edit: could not find the post, but could find the image in my downloads, so here it is.

Interesting. Found it, thanks! I am consistently impressed by that 8" and can't wait to see what the 10" will do. Question still stands, how much power does that take? And I shudder to think of the expense to reach 20hz with purifi drivers and amps. I know it's actual endgame, but still. It was nice looking at Revels and acknowledging that they were $80 SB Acoustics drivers treated perfectly. Now I know there's actually something better without snakeoil makes my stomach turn in an impoverished, inadequate way.
