Yes, the early amps were put together with a clear silicone compound. All T0-3 transistors and micas were generously brushed with it as well as any of the heatsink bar interfaces. The newer white non-silicone compound should work as well or better, just not as invisible.
Thanks MJB11, I thought as much, and seeing as I could be disassembling / re-assembling a few times the white compound is going
to be messy to deal with.

The newer heatsink compounds are much more efficient in transferring heat than those early clear compounds. You only need to put the thinnest smear on - don't overdo it.
