It seems there are plenty of choices for 10 and 15-inch bass drivers for OB. But I am not seeing many 12-inch.
Is this as simple as finding a high efficiency (> 90 dB) and Qts > .6 that fits my price range or does Xmax also fit into the requirements?
TIA

Xmax is important but can be mitigated by number of drivers and what kind of OB you intend to use
Low cost chinese PA drivers seem to be good candidates as their diminute magnet sizes allow corresponding highish Qts... Like the unit that fitted my grandma's valve radio, 50 years ago, though that one was made at home sweet home, made great again tomorrow, or not...😛

Probably had a desireable alnico magnet too 😉 http://gr-research.com/sw-12-16fr.aspx

The GRS 12 inch subwoofers at parts express model well in multiples. Yes x-max is important. Linkwitz has an excell spread sheet: SPL_max1.xls that works well for comparing drivers.

Good sounding driver, low Qts at .39

What a pleasant coincidence since I have been pondering the same question.
My plan is to put two on each side in a flat baffle paired with the
Tangband w8-1772.
I have been looking at the Visaton W 300. Om paper it looks quite promising from a quite well known brand.
Here in Europe you can get it for around 65 dollars. PE sells it for 80.
Might be worth it even in the US.
Looking forward to some valuable input in this thread.

Has anyone tried the baby brother of the now famous Alpha 15A?
95.6 dB 1W/1m and Total Q (Qts) 0.77. Might be a little less sloppy compared to the 15A with its Total Q (Qts) of 1.26?

These are specifically designed for open baffle:
Acoustic Elegance LO12 woofer for Open Baffle Applications
Not sure what your budget is.

I'm using 2 GRS 12PF woofers (PE 292-412 paper cone, not the sub version) in a Z-Frame and it sounds really good. It gets quite low too. See my crappy graph - I'm still new to HOLM. The magenta is near field.

Wow, those look incredible for the $$$. Fs = 35. Qts is a little high but I think these are worth a try. Thanks.
