But to power them I would use properly conditioned sources. 😀

According Lampizator and Pacific Valve the 805 SET is a great amp, which looks true for me.
@wavebourn-I used them to supply an ESound E5 Signature Edition CD. A really well made and superb CD player. Replaced an ageing Marantz CD63 KI SIGNATURE. Very happy with Cattylink.
Yes, pretty good. But can sound much better with minor changes (well, "minor" may mean throwing out some venerable tubes in favor of unknown ones, depending on the model).
before buying any tube amp, make sure you know where to have it repaired or just serviced

Oh, I was thinking about buying a Mingda for its nice enclosure and iron, and modding it with my own circuit. But if it already sounds good, then I'm no longer interested.

well, maybe we got different tastes. I like MING DA design, simple but elegant. They are not fancy or showy.
As for the sound, I could not tell much more. But my friend's MING DA MC34-AB is so fantastic!
Actually, their handcrafted circuitry attracts me most. Now too many solid state amps are polluting the market.

Look, driving 845 tubes by 300B tubes that were not needed at all because he used them on currents on which they are very non-linear he had to add isolated filament supplies because 300B tubes have direct powered cathodes. Dear moderators, please move finally this thread to the tube forum where everyone can understand what we are talking about. It is a shameless advertising of the product on a DIY forum using false claims.
I repaired one.
It had rated for 400V coupling caps between 300B drivers powered from 450V source and grids of 845 tubes with applied to them bias. This capacitors failed, causing too high current drawn by 845 tubes. Resistors in 1 KV power supply burst in flame, and burnt coming near them wires that went to the power switch. It was a total disaster. I had to cut part of PCB under that resistors because it become conductive after an electric ark with kilovolt around, replace wires going to rhe power switch, and insulate them properly, then install appropriate capacitors instead of that caps that caused the disaster in the first place. Also, I wanted to redo the whole schematic because I found that output transformers were pretty good, and can be used for really nice amps, but did not do that because it would require to rewire too much. And it would leave empty holes from odd tubes. And would look less impressive because tubes that would perform better would look less impressive.
Brother hasan integrated MingDa. Mc34, i think. It sounds wonderful. He replaved most caps and put kt66's in ouput. All upgraded tubes. Really phenominal sound. Pentode/triode switch. Replaced linn active setup.
I can show you how to make a real amp on the same chassis, with the same transformers, but with different schematic. You will be surprised. But as the source for chassis and transformers their amps are too expensive.
I believe you and would love to see the schematic. His amp was only 1.5k, i think. A lot for DIY. But nothing in hifi world, as you well know. Clearly this pllace is a treasure for the willing, but not all are willing. I am slowly replacing his gear with DIY stuff, so i would love to see your suggestion.
I have seen many pictures of made-in-China "high end tube amps" in many Chinese audio magazines and they did look impressive. Do not forget that the amp manufacturers are making a niche consumer products for sale. Look is very important. Unfortunately, a lot of the buyers (in China) are buying these products based on reviews published in "well known" audio magazines by "well known reviewers". These consumers have do not the foggiest idea what a decent amp would sound like.
I would not be surprised that the amp problem you encountered was due to parts run out during manufacturing. The workers do not want to stop the work and just grab something that is "close enough". This is typical for manufacturing in China - speed, the time line has to be met. Quality is secondary.
Do not get me wrong, great products can be made in China. Just do your own QC and QA. Case in point, Prima Luna is a good example. The company claimed the return rate for their amps are < 1% (this is the figure I got from an interview of one of their senior official published a few years back).
