In the arcade machines I build the audio is: PC line out > 12V (10W?)chinese amp > 2x 4" 4ohm drivers. So about $35 of audio, not high end stuff here.
Now I want to add a headphone jack. Ideally the action of plugging in the headphones would cut the feed to the speakers, but I'm happy with a manual switch.
So can I just wire a switch into the speaker feed to divert the feed to a headphone circuit? And what does that circuit look like? Is it just a resistor that the headphones go in parallel with.
hmm, or should I be switching the line level outputs from the PC and have a headphone amp (or just volume cut?) or do most headphones have their own volume control?
Give me your ideas please. Simplicity is good. So is low cost.

This is about power amp adapter to headphones:......

This might give you some ideas:

Headphones are normally fed from the speaker outlet via a series resistor of around say 330 ohms (use a 1 watt type) per channel. Its usually cheapo headphones that have their own volume control.

Thanks guys.
The first couple of headphones I've found at about the price range I'm thinking are 24ohm and 32ohm.
SE-MJ503 | FAVORITE SOUND WITH COMPACT STYLE | Pioneer
ZX310 Headphones | MDR-ZX310 / MDR-ZX310AP | Sony UK
It looks like I can use the poweramp outputs, but...
Now I'm thinking that my first choice would be to manually switch the PC line out. (And have a phones volume control next to the phones socket). I'm assuming here that the line out will drive those headphones to an acceptable level, and all I need is a variable resistor for volume. Is that right?
I've ordered the pioneer MJ503, so I'll soon be able to test the volume question for myself.
edit: Assuming I have the choice of using either the PC output or the Amplifier output, which is the best route?

I wouldn't count on a line output being directly able to drive headphones correctly. Adding a 'diy' volume control to work with the headphones directly would require a very low value dual ganged control, something that is not readily available. That's a poor option.
Using the main speaker feed with appropriate series resistors will give the best results here.

Thanks again. I will look into this again if I want a clean looking audio control panel.
For the first off though, I just picked up one of these for £14 Stereo Headphone Amplifier | Products - B-Tech International
The user will be presented with access to the front of 2 amplifers. So he can turn the main speakers off or down, and has independant volume controls.
This saves me having to do any wiring 🙂
