I have a Phase Technology Teatro 6.5 speaker that has died. I connected it up to the right speaker connection with no change. It seems like their is only sound coming from the tweeter. How can I test the 5.5 driver on the bench? I want to see if it is the driver or the x-over. I have a digital ohm meter.
Momentarily connect a button cell (watch battery) across the driver inputs. If you can hear a pop the speaker is working.

Or even something more readily available like a AA or AAA battery. If no sound it might be as simple as a bad connection. You can also push lightly on the woofer cone to see if there is scraping or scratching or because they seem to be removable can you pull them and run a DC resistance test?

Hi, checking the bass driver versus the c/o is trivial ? I'm lost, rgds, sreten.
First things first my friend. We can walk him through the rest later. That's where your knowledge comes in.
Hi Gene,
The easiest is to set your ohm meter to "Resistance" mode and touch the 2 leads to the speaker terminals. There should be a "crackling" sound indicating the speaker is working.

He has told us the tweeter works, I think he should be pulling the the woofer and testing it out of circuit, no?
Or by speaker did you mean driver?

Hi Guys, Surely the best way to start the analysis is to pull one wire off the offending bass unit and test directly to the drive unit with meter or batteries. If they can’t be pulled then one wire will need to be desoldered temporarily.

Hi Cal,
Yup he should unscrew the woofer(driver) out and do a direct test.
So with driver in one hand, and ohm meter in another (tough balancing act). just touch the leads directly to the woofer's terminals.
The speaker is an MTM so he needs to test both the woofers, just to be sure.
Here's a link to the speakers.
