My recollection is that the good belt-drive turntables used small synchronous motors. Shaded-pole was for rim-drive changers in "hi-fi" console music systems and mono portables. You can't go back to the 1990s and buy used turntables for a buck, but there are still deals to be found on old turntables worthy of upgrading.
