The KK 3 uses the same B110 and T27, I am not sure if this problem exists in the KK 3 or if Falcon redesigned crossover solved this problem.
The DN12 XO point is 400 Hz, so a bump at 125 Hz from a smaller than optimum sealed box should not be an issue., and i expect that Malcohm’s XO likely does not change that. Ideally it would be lower, but that is much more practical if you biamp.
I did do a comparison of a set of LS3/5As i restored fror a friend (Facon XOs) with a couple of our millSize boxes (essentially the smae size). The LS3/5As got smoked. Like the Quad 57s, sometimes the downsides are not sufficiently compensated for by their (wondeful) assets for give people/applications.

If your ears have become attuned to the open sound of an elecrostatic loudspeaker then you'll quickly perceive the limitations of any box speaker in terms of its 'boxy' resonances!
I went from ESLs to boxed FRs where we kearned to make the boxes as open (or even more so) than the ESLs.
Execution. Probably 90% or so of speaker boxes are crap. Probably more.

I have had quite a few loudspeakers, Mission 770, B&W DM6, Goldmund Super Dialogs, Tannoy silvers, reds and HPD 385, three pairs of ESL 63 - not at the same time - Proac, Tangent, Spendor BC1, Aerial 10T, Kelly ribbons and a pair of B&W DM 70 but in the end I went back to QUAD.
My friend who has triple quad 57 in his main system, but a set of BC1 that i sold him new in the 70s. It really holds up. Which Tangents (i liked a lot and learned some important lessons from John Greenbank). Which Deccas. DK30 or Londons. Or one of there complete designs (i did get to tweak a prototype 8” + Decca London, which were fantastic. I have. aset of 12” Tannoys lined up, i think there is a lot more potential in them than i have heard so far.

And probably 90% of the population are so used to the sound of the box speaker that they think that it is normal.Execution. Probably 90% or so of speaker boxes are crap. Probably more.
I must find out more about your execution of boxed loudspeakers Dave!
And for future reference there is a dedicated site for older KEF drive unit (i.e. K3) people.
This has the very basic name of; "hifiloudspeakers". Google: Home Page hifiloudspeakers.info and it come up.
I guy called Allan runs it and it has lots of datasheets and several forums for KEF devotees of an older vintage, both drive units and their owners...
Cheers Jonathan

What is the sound of a box speaker? What is it about a box speaker that gives it it's sound? And probably 90% of the population are so used to the sound of the box speaker that they think that it is normal.

Answers: (a) boxy, and, (b) the box! 🙂
You see, that's why most speakers are box speakers - it's all about domestic acceptability! Please see photo
You may like those ceiling high, industrial mesh strainers - I may like them - but ask Joe Public and you'll get a shake of the head! 😉
I don't quite get where the problem is. A husband needs a man cave and a wife 100 pairs of shoes matched to an equal amount of purces, all neatly storaged in a walk-in closet. Fair?
A minor issue easily fixed
Not so if you look at all the speaker boxes in the world. But it can be fixed.

There is a chap in Roleystone, Western Australia, Rob McKinlay, who designs and builds electrostatic panels. Before I purchased my current pair of 63s I almost bought one of his kits.
Those look interesting… do you have a link?
dave
Sure, Electrostatic Loudspeakers By ER Audio - Rob is a down to earth chap or you can call him mate.
On the other hand, I have been browsing old issues of Stereo Sound, Japan, and I noticed how many Japanese are addicted to horns, coaxial and triaxial speaker systems even though they live in apartments that look more like an office cubicle. When it comes to downsized living, Tokyo has it all. From capsule hotels and compact prefabs to communal share houses, land scarcity and high property prices have pushed realtors and architects to work with limited space, resulting in tiny homes and rabbit-hole apartments cluttering the capital’s neighborhoods.
One of the reviewers has a simple system, a JBL D44000 Paragon driven by a pair JBL SG640 and a SG620 preamplifier, other reviewers and readers' systems show a large quantity of Tannoy GFRs, Autographs, Jensen Imperials, JBL Hartsfields, EV Patricians, Altecs VOT, etc.
Please look at this WSJ video.

With the exception of Tannoy dual concentrics I have never listened to a horn loaded system. Yes, they are boxes, but how do they compare with ESLs?
Cheers,
Horacio
