Well my buddy braved the roads and brought me another KSA-250. All the way from NY! This must be the second version (horizontal posts) as it runs cooler than the previous one I had. I get 130F at the sinks compared to 174F on the previous one with horizontal posts.

As good as the Sanders and Wyreds were, this thing sounds much better.

Looks like it was serviced recently , fresh looking caps , what are you hooking it up to ... ?

KSA-250 in Bad Shape

I have a KSA-250 in very bad shape, don't know the history behind it but I'd guess that it was used for parts or destructive (UL?) testing. It is missing the front panel and the transformer leads are cut, the rest looks okay at a glance. Krell refuses to give or sell me a schematic - are they available? See pictures below - flash makes the dust look far worse than it is:

He had said it was by the fellow he purchased it from, but couldn't find the paperwork. They power Salk SoundScape 8's with Raal tweeter, Accutron mids.

At least you knew there was nothing living inside.

I have a cat that loves to hunt for spiders....

Wow, that amp was used hard and put away dirty.... Yeah, Krell won't share schematics.

Hi James! We all can't live in paradise...who would shovel the snow?😛

I bought the first KSA-250 and it didn't work well with my ESL's so I sold it to a buddy that had Revel F52's. Then I changed speakers and got another KSA-250 from the same guy. That would be Ed, the SRT speaker king.

The first one must have been a version 3 as it got way hotter than this one (174f versus 130f at the sinks). This one had been to Krell for refurb before Ed bought it. Seems to be fine, no discolored/burnt caps or DC at the outputs.

Ed still has a pair of MDA-500's but he isn't parting with those. He is a big fan of this Krell amp. He also likes the KRC HR pre.

Whoops, realized I am not subscribed to this thread anymore...

So amps went to 10 from 7 after a few hours? I will have to check mine...

I recapped the Soft start after seeing the discoloration of caps - 700ohm resistor and relays are also good to go.

The amp would sometime "fart" on startup, so I took the amp apart to see if there was a relay contact to be cleaned. As it turned out, the PS ground to Chassis was detached, and left dangling in the amp (lucky nothing shorted). When reconnected, "fart" was completely gone...

The KSA-250 amp I have also has a rare red PS board, and says "Krell Signature Edition"...

I also picked up a Krell KSL preamp the other day and need to do some critical listening to see if it will replace my Aikido 6922/6922 preamp I built. I like the fact that it is fully balanced...

By the way, anyone know what the bias setting should be on the Preamp?

The KSA=250 sounds very nice on my ML CLS clones (original panels completely re-mylared by yours truly)....
