Linn Index Mk2 disappointing sound quality

Thanks guys, you've been immensely helpful. I have ordered a pair of Y-splitters so I can trying bi-amping and I will indeed report back on how I find the changes in SQ.

Spotify sounds interesting, I shall install it on my PC and give it a whirl, cheers.

Sorry for my brevity, it's hotter than hell here and it's not agreeing with me, especially as where my PC sits is directly under a large skylight so I feel like I'm frying, so I'm spending my time in the shade with a book.

I listened to a pair back when they were a current model Ian. My impression was the same as yours- they're pretty poor. I remember being a bit surprised at the time. I have a pair of beat-up Mission 731s bought cheap from a car boot sale a few years back in the loft somewhere- they seemed fine!

I do think the Indexes sound better than the 731s, but is it a big difference? No, not really.

Just shows that for the price, the 731s really were a great piece of kit. I'm keeping mine, they are going to become my rear channel speakers and backups in case anything happens to the Indexes.

I have no problem with controversial, in fact, I share your view; the problem is, many designs found in cheaper hardware, especially from the Far East are not very competent these days.

I suppose that building my own DAC (which I'm doing right now) is as much about the fun of doing so, rather than a quest for improved SQ, as really, I'm happy with the quality of the DAC in my Yamaha DSP-E800, it plays back everything I've thrown at it with no issues at all and to my ears, sounds good.

Splitter cables and new 12awg speaker cable arrived, didn't take long to set it up and by some miracle I got it right first time.

Immediate noticeable improvement over a single power amp, it sounds fabulous, bass is tighter, punchier, more defined, high end is soaring and oh so detailed, I absolutely love it. There is now a definite improvement over my old Mission 731s, in fact, quite a jump in quality.

For the money, I think it's pretty great:

2x Linn RoomAmps = 55ukp
2x Linn Index Mk2 = 49.95ukp
5m 12AWG speaker cable = 6.99ukp
2x Cambridge Audio Pacific interconnect = 9.98ukp
2x y splitter cables = 3.98ukp

Total of 125.90ukp, all secondhand from ebay apart from the cables.

Thanks for all the help guys, wouldn't have done it without!
