LM4766 vs LM3886 vs "textbook Class D"

after a long discussion and a few simulations i realised that going for an ic is the best idea in terms of cost and sound quality.
i realised that the lm4766 may not be that bad of an option considering its simmilar price to the 3886 and the fact that it haves two channels at good enough power out.
im geniuenly intrested in how it(lm4776) compares to class d amplifiers, discrete designs and the lm3886.

If you're looking for a new amp project, you simply can't go wrong with a design from @tomchr. His Modulus-86 amp is LM3886 based composite design and comes in a variety of kit forms. And, you simply can't go wrong with the sound. Clear, articulate, transparent, and all with plenty of dynamics and great specs.

The LM4766 is basically two LM2876 in one package. The LM2876 and LM3886 are note the same chip. That's pretty clear from the maximum supply voltage, which is 24 V higher for the LM3886. It wouldn't surprise me if there are some commonalities between the LM2876 and the LM3886, but if anything the LM3886 would be an improved LM2876.

Comparing the THD+N vs frequency for the LM2876 vs LM3886 I would guess that the LM2876 would sound harsher and/or have more glare than the LM3886. The THD+N gets pretty high at the higher frequencies with the LM2876.

But either could be a fun project... 🙂 Note that it'll be easier to find thermal pads for the LM2876 than it will for the LM4766. Also note that the LM3886 comes in an insulated package that's super easy to use. You'll also find the LM3886 to be much better supported by the DIY community. There's no shortage of LM3886 boards available and some of them, including my LM3886DR, offer good performance.

Of course, you can take the performance to a whole new level with a composite amp as I do in the Modulus-86. Something similar could be done with the LM2876, but probably with a bit lower performance in the end.

Hope this helps.

thanks tom my only issue with the 3886 is the cost and that i would need two of them and i sadly cant apply for the ti sample program becuse im not a member of any company or university but i think i might try to ask someone and stuff

Just make your own. Or use perf board:

I personally use LM4766 amp for my week end listening in stereo configuration. I play from MP3, CD and some times vinyls through this amp. I can not give you technical difference but the difference felt by my ears is LM4766 is pretty good. The amp was in my budget also in the year of 2010. I made the PCB myself, if you can do it yourself I can provide the default schematic and PCB design which I am using.
