Marantz SACD player-reads CD, SACD-stopped reading DVD-A

I bought a used Philips Cd823 which displayed the same message, and also another saying that the disc had not been finalised.

Turned out to be the small 'turntable' the disc rests on being in the wrong position. The seller said he'd cleaned the mechanism and must have pushed it down the spingle. It took several attempts to move it up the spindle slightly until I had no more problems.

Otherwise a new mechansim is required.

I am so sorry that you get upset by not recognizing what is the topic here.....it is NOT about SACD-R...pls re-read the title and my previous post.
Ok I will post again. What exactly are you trying to play? Not SACD-R? Commercial SACD then? DVD-A? You have exact copied DVD-A onto DVD-R, then the proper terminology is DVD-AR. Did you make an exact copy, or did you just copy the filesystem on to a DVD-R? You previous post was ridiculous, using other brands of players or models as "proof" that yours can do this. These capabilities to play copies are special for players.

Then you need to adjust the laser properly, or otherwise service the mechanism, which is difficult for many technicians.

See if any tiny electrolytics are there in the mechanism, change them first, then proceed further, old or cheap ones can be a problem source.

Thank you for your extensive post.
Update...player now has different ideas about playing sacd/cds as well...ie. no play.....play thru all w/o issues...play and stop at 2nd minute or 5th etc...
I ordered new laser assembly+belt

I hope that will work okay for you.... just a reminder, remove the solder blob from the laser pickup (assuming that the new/replacement mechanism will come with the solder blob across the laser, that is...)

sa-ki ruby...sacd player with sacd mechanism as any other ones...
Hello,
I have had a Marantz SA-KI Ruby player since July 2020. I use it several hours every day. It has been flawless.
It does NOT play anything DVD, AFAIK. I have not seen any reference to the player playing DVD's. I believe that the SA-10 player does play some sort of DVD, but not DVD-A's. The Ruby plays rbcds and sacds.

A couple of posts ago you mentioned Aging Mode. The Ruby and SA-10 Service Manuals give lots of information on Aging Mode. The SA-10 manual gives more information than the Ruby manual, including how to check laser outputs and the parameters for acceptable operation. I would suggest you purchase the Service Manuals before proceeding further. Here is a link:
https://www.service-manual.net/?download=66134-marantz-sa-10-sa-10s1-service-manual
You can purchase the Ruby Service Manual at the same place.

If you need to replace the laser mechanism, you can buy one from Encompass, or the Canadian supplier, and do it yourself if you know how. The laser mechanisms are not expensive, at about 50 USD plus shipping. The Ruby and the SA-10 use the same one.
If you don't know how to do it, then you need to send the player to a Marantz Service Center, once you find one. The sale to Masimo has changed things.

The mechanism is probably bought out, if you are lucky it will be from a good brand like Philips.
If it is a flimsy no-name brand, either scrap the whole thing, or change to a DVD mechanism from a standard supplier.
You might have to calibrate for a substitute mechanism.

DVD-A is audio files burned on a DVD, the line pitch is finer on those discs compared to CDs, so you need better focus.
The firmware must also allow the DVD to be read.
Please check the instruction and service manuals before starting, if it is not capable then you are wasting time and effort.

Hi...thanks for the input..I already did this.
1.Me posting a fact that my sa-ki stopped playing dvd-a (dvd-a=burned dvd disk with audio files put into folders, same way as on a usb-a key/ssd drive) is not an imaginary idea of a confused teenager who is seeking extra attention on this forum...please accept this 😉
2.Please refer to owners manual pages 15, 26, 31

Fair enough regarding the Ruby being able to play DVD.
If you already have the Ruby Service Manual, did you check for laser outputs? This is detailed on page 70 in the Ruby SM. The important value is the T22 value that reads sacd and dvd.
There is nothing in the SM on the T3 servo adjustment.

I get the feeling that you have already done everything I have suggested. So I will just stop now.

Well since I have a SA-KI Ruby player I have some interest here.
It only takes a minute or two to check the laser output level and to assess the state of the sacd laser. If the level is below the acceptable limit, then disc reading becomes problematic. So that is easy to check.
If the laser output level is acceptable and disc reading is problematic it is obviously something else. This can be very difficult to diagnose. The disc reading issues with the SA-8260 player took Marantz a couple of years and numerous Service Bulletins to figure out the issues.

I currently have a thread on Audiogon asking if anyone with one of the latest Marantz Reference Series players has had to replace a laser assembly. I did this recently as I was wondering about this. I have yet to see any forum post anywhere from anyone who has had an issue. Years ago, sacd disc reading and laser issues were all over the digital and sacd forums. Now nothing.

In 3 1/2 years and over 2000 laser use hours on the sacd laser, I have had no issues at all, not a single one. The laser output level is in the acceptable range. My 3 1/2 years used to be a long laser life.

I have Sa7. All the SMD servo capacitors mounted inside laser box are dead. Yamaha. High End SACD S-1000 hit the junk status only 3 years from purchase. Bought two chinese heads but no joy. I haven't seen servo adjusting pots in any player built in last 20 years. Isn't this software adjusted via diagnostic ports now?
