Modulus-86: Composite amplifier achieving <0.0004 % THD+N.

Just a quick update on the overall status of the Modulus-86:

The LM337L in TO-92 package has been discontinued by TI, so make sure you have this IC on hand if you plan to buy the bare circuit boards. If you have bought boards recently and cannot source this IC anywhere, I do have a very, very limited supply that I can part with. These will only be available to those who bought the Modulus-86 from me directly.

My supply of LM337L will go into Modulus-86 Rev. 3 stereo kits: https://neurochrome.com/products/modulus-86-stereo-kit
They will also go into the Modulus-86 10th Anniversary Edition kit: https://neurochrome.com/products/modulus-86-10th-anniversary-edition

So if you don't have this IC, I suggest you buy one of my kits.

The 10th Anniversary Edition comes in two flavours: TO-99 metal can and 8-pin DIP. I have two (2) kits left with the TO-99, so if this wasn't in your Christmas stocking now's the time to buy. I have quite a few of the 8-pin DIP option available.

I expect them to live a long and prosperous life. 🙂

The products I was part of designing at National Semiconductor were required to last a minimum of ten years of operation at the worst case operating conditions. This means 10 years at max VCC, max die temperature, max output current, 95% relative humidity, yadda-yadda. So unless you use your amplifier in a steam room or sauna, they should outlast most of us.

And NO. This does NOT mean that we designed the parts to fail after 10.0000000001 years. It means that the failure rates of the parts was at some acceptably low level after ten years of operation at the worst case operating conditions. I don't know what "acceptably low" means. In the six-sigma world, probably below one-in-a-million.

Your DIY amplifier is vastly more likely to fail due to a bad solder joint or a wire that's come loose than to die by the failure of one of the ICs.

I have good news for those wanting bare PCBs for the Modulus-86 10th Anniversary Edition instead of the full kit. I have two pairs of boards left that I can sell separately. $199/pair including Canada Post shipping worldwide. If you'd like them sooner, PM or email me for the FedEx/UPS shipping rate.

The boards are of the DIP-8 version. You can stuff a TO-92 in there if you (gently!) bend the leads.

Make sure you can get the LM337L/NOPB in TO-92 package before you express interest. This IC has been discontinued by TI and is now unavailable except at outfits like Rochester and the like. It's likely that smaller distributors have stock as well.

You can find the full BOM and build guide on the Modulus-86 10AE product page: https://neurochrome.com/products/modulus-86-10th-anniversary-edition

PM or email me if interested. Just add @neurochrome.com to my user ID here. Note that this is for the bare, unpopulated, PCBs. No parts are included.

I have plenty of the DIP-8 kits available. I'm down to one TO-99 (metal can) version. I'm not able to get more of the TO-99 version, so once that kit is gone that'll be it for that version. Also, once all the kits sell out the Modulus-86 10th Anniversary Edition will sunset.
