Opinion on the DSD1796 chip

Regarding the sound, where is the DSD1796 today, compared to the new AKM or Sabre chips?
I'm looking for this DAC

At the top end of DAC ICs implementation is more important than the IC used. Check out the wide variance in performance:

so in answer if this DAC is a good choice it would be difficult to say without measurements.

That's OK, but I wonder how the DAC sounds.
No one seems to have any experience with them.

It seems that this DSD1796 chip is not as popular as Saber chips.

I've not seen any designs using it whereas Sabre DACs are everywhere. So I concur. I also agree with Ken and others that implementation is king.
