Can anyone tell me the difference you would notice in the sound between the basic red and the more expensive models of the cartridge style? Thank you.
It's a bit like comparing a Lada with Nissan. They are so far apart words cannot describe how bad the Red is & the Bronze is preferred by many people over the Black.
Cavate, however you need to have arm height adjustment so you can set the Bronze stylus up to it's correct SRA.
Cheers

I bought a used Project Essential with a Red a few years ago. I was also listening to an old Dual 1219 that I alternated a Shure v15 type 2 with new stylus and Shure M97. Not sure the Ortofon Red sounded a whole lot worse. The 1219 has crapped out and I can’t fix it or pay to have it fixed at the moment.
Looks like the Blue might be a big upgrade and more affordable.

I had a black that I pulled one of the pins out from. Ortofon would not replace the cart even though the pin showed absolutely no keying so it could not be gripped by the plastic moulding. To cut a long story short, a member here told me the black stylus fitted the Red cart so I tried it and it worked pretty well.
It is common practice for Ortofon to use (almost) the same body/generator with all different types of carts within the same line. For instance, look at the OM line. You could buy a cheap OM3 and put as well a FineLine 30 or the top of the pole Fritz Gyger 40 needle into it. It might be preferable to use a SuperOM body with a 40 stylus, though.
Best regards!
