Hello,
using my sacd player Lindemann 822, that has a balanced output of 4,6v/100 ohm, into the P1.7 preamp is it better theorically to use some attenuation with the internal switches and 'open' the front double gain pots or go 'straight in' without any resistance switch and 'close' the pots maybe at 9 o'clock?
Thanks,
Stefano

well, simply try any combination you can think of, and then use that one which is giving you best sound
you didn't said what amp and speakers you are using, but with 4V6 as DAC output, what you need is not preamplifier but simply attenuator, hopefully adequately buffered
4V6 is seriously high voltage for line level .......... when 2V is practically modern standard, enough to drive most power amps to full power

Aleph P1.7--->Threshold Sa3.9e (60w class A; 600ohm xlr inputs)--->Eminent Technology Lft8b (Planar, 83/85 db, low efficiency but 10 ohm flat impedance).
In a 40mq room but I seat at only 2,60m from speakers.

lemme see........
3.9, 60W@8R/channel
+26.6 gain, which is ~21.4V/V
60W@8R means 21.9Vrms
divided with 21.4, results in roughly 1Vrms of input voltage for full blast
meaning - your DAC itself is more than 4.9 times capable to make SA3.9 reaching full power
so, finding/buying/stealing/building decent preamp without gain (selector with buffered attenuator) is much better solution
take Iron Pre (bal) from Store, build it without output autoformer and enjoy
