I wasn't too sure what forum to put this in!
Basically, my audio interface only has one output and I need the ability to connect 3 sets of speakers and two headphones to it. I don't need the audio to be able to go to all 4 outs at once, so I just need a passive switchbox more or less. Obviously, however, the headphones will need amps.
Firstly, I'm debating whether or not it is worthwhile putting in volume control (attenuating the signal) or just using the sound cards software mixer. How bad is the bit depth reduction from the later method? Obviously this will be a lot easier and cheaper to make without volume control... 😀
Secondly, the two sets of headphones need to be individually amped, but share the same source sound source, as one will be for monitoring (Sennheiser HD280 or AKG 240) and the other will be for our vocalist with a different type of headphone entirely.
Thirdly, I'm not too sure what kind of amp to use. CMoy headphone amps look very simple and would be a good start for me. However, I do need good audio quality since I do a lot of mixing through headphones. How would CMoys compare to the inbuilt headphone amps on say... MOTU or RME interfaces?
Fourthly, I need the cost to stay under $200AU ($160US or so).
Now, with those details out of the way, what's the best way to go about doing this? I'm fine with a soldering iron but I have very limited experience in doing PCBs and what not - probably the most advanced thing I've ever made was a crystal radio (like every other kid right?) haha. Can anyone recommend any guides on the internet for making the amps and switch box?
If it is feasible, I would actually rather get someone to make the amps for me and I just stick them into the switch box.
