Yes it's true! None of the DIY SONY VFET input stage cards I've designed, use Toshiba JFETs. Nor do they use MOSFETs from IXYS/Littelfuse.

ppl are often happy with carefully used BC546/556, especially when not knowing they're in

I failed to use BC546 or BC556 for these boards, the dIce/dVce (hybrid pi model parameter "ro") was higher than I wanted. To each their own I guess.

I've meant generally - nice small signal bjts

though ..... not that I'm investing much time in using them as gain devices
