Hey guys,
I recently purchased a pair of PSB Image 5T speakers from someone I do not know. We met in a parking lot, and I couldn't audition. The price was good, and they looked fine, so I didn't hesitate.
Hooked them up, thought they sounded okay, but a little light on the treble.
I read some forums, and find out this is a common problem and that the tweeters may be blown but still emitting sound. My question is this. What can I do to fix this sound?
I didn't want to buy another tweeter for money purposes. But, I noticed there are three prongs on the tweeter upon inspection. I wondered why? I may try to move the cable to this prong and see if there is any difference. But, honestly, I am unsure what to do next. I feel that it is not the crossover, as others have experienced the same problem as I.
Please let me know. And any links to buy new tweeters.

Hi therealco,
Have you tried to contact the manufacturer here in Ontario? I hear they aren't bad to deal with.

I agree call them. The 5T's still average decent money and sound pretty good being an earlier upper mid level. They have ample bass and a nice mid range. And highs when there working. I would fix them right it shouldnt be hard finding replacements. I would rather wait to do so before trying to customize them and potentially doing more harm.
I agree that going with a factory replacement would be the best option. And the one I am trying to seek out. There is a chap in PEI that has a pair that he is willing to send me for relatively cheap! So, I am hoping that these work out. They are salvaged, but he tells me they should work fine. I am really crossing my fingers here. Reading through the forums, I've found out this is a common problem.
I unhooked the tweeter while music was playing, and there was no difference in the sound output at all. So, conversely I hooked up just the tweeter, and could hear an extremely faint tinny sound when the volume was cranked. Almost inaudible. I am still hoping / tihnking this is the tweeter and not the crossover.
I inspected the crossover, and the caps were fine looking, and I've read of people thinking it was the crossover, but turned out to be the tweet. But, at the very least, this tells me that it is not a loose wire to the tweeter. I think the tweet has an air core inductor and a couple electrolytic caps that would be easy enough to replace if I had to, but I'm hoping the ones I'm getting from this chap are going to fix the problem. As, I was really disappointed at how they sounded... But, make no wonder! The tweeters are gone! lol

Let's say it ends up that the new tweeters I ordered don't work, and it's the crossover. What would be the best thing to check in that case? Is it possible to create my own crossover for the high frequencies? I know little about electronic schematics, but could solder one, for sure.
You need some testing to eliminate problems before you go spending money. PM me and we can see what is up. I am local in St.John's.

Hi therealco,
The crossover is easy to repair. I think you have narrowed it right down to the tweeters with your testing. One thing you ought to do before anything else. All PSB and see if there is a change or bulletin for your speaker model. Have your serial numbers handy when you call. If there is a factory change, they might look after you. If enough people have this problem, I'll bet they did change something from the factory. Even if they say no, at least you can move ahead with the knowledge that you aren't voiding any extended warranty.
Give PSB a call tomorrow and see.
