Antonio Salieri
There is a wide-spread myth based on Pushkin's play Mozart and Salieri, and more recently the famous movie Amadeus that Salieri was a kind of giftless hack envious of Mozart. Nothing could be further from truth. Salieri was a personal friend of Mozart who did a lot for preservation of his musical heritage. Moreover, Salieri adopted the orphaned Mozart child. Salieri's Requiem is a testament to his great talent.

Composed as requiem for Manzoni, by which name it is sometimes known. The Libera Me was originally composed as part of a composite Requiem by several composers for Rossini.Composed as death mass for Rossini.
Officially yes, for Rossini and then for Manzoni. We all know Rossini, but who the heck is Manzoni? IMO, Verdi's Requiem is a challenge to Verdi's arch-rival Wagner.
Is Brahms German Requiem any good?
If so I will take a listening 🙂

Let's move on to Faure and Durufle. While half a century apart, these are often recorded and performed togethed. Mainly for similar style, mood and influence.

Yes, I know that, relatively minor in importance compared to the grandiose scale of Verdi's Requiem.
Not in Italy and, for sure, not in the XIX century. In Italy, the work of Manzoni is only second to the Dante's Divine Comedy and not so far from the works of Giuseppe Verdi.
Cherubini Requiem has a funny story behind it. Seeing the opportunity, Cherubini composed it soon after the Bourbon restoration following the defeat of Napoleon, and dedicated it to Louis XVI, the king beheaded during the French Revolution. Although it premiered at the anniversary of Louis XVI death, the Church refused to add it to its canon for the reason of using a female choir.
My favorite version is the latest Ricardo Muti.

Ligeti!
For those who are unaware, the two movements of Ligeti Requiem, Kyrie and Lux Aeterna, are used in the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey. The Requiem is amazing music - don't be intimidated by its being avant-garde, it does not need understanding. Relax, open your mind, and flow with it. It is not like anything else.
