Rotel RDG-1520

Hello Forum

I'm posting this thread because I would like to know if any of you are familiar with the "Rotel gateway player" (RDG1520).

If so - have you been able to receive dab+ stations on the player.

According to "Digicomparison.com" it should be compatible with dab+"
Unfortunately I have never been able to receive any dab+ - and have only seen the message "No service" in the units display. It has dab - band III - and I think that "Digicomparison" because of that have made the conclusion that it then should be able to receive dab+ /but right now I doubt that this is correct.

AFAIK the RDG-1520 is DAB not DAB+. This is only software/firmware as the hardware is often capable (at the broadcast side of things only software was changed). Unfortunately most manufacturers expect you to buy a new device. As usual one should update firmware just in case.

There was a recent firmware update mainly to solve internet radio service. You have done this update? I hope you did as it is not available anymore after 21 June 2021 AND the device will not be able to adapt to other services as well... It is rare that firmware updates are so mandatory as in this case and to have only 1 month to do the update is very user unfriendly (and unrealistic as well). In this case it makes the difference between being able to use the device or to have it as a door stopper.

Update fur Rotel-Internetradios - Reciva-Dienst lauft aus

Wichtige Informationen fur Rotel Internet Radio Besitzer - B&W Group (Schweiz)

Opinion: if A brands behave like this it is no surprise that people will buy cheap throw away Chinese devices. If you missed the update I advise to contact the danish service organization/distributor with the demand to fix it for free. Or to trade it in with a discount on a current product that can receive internet radio (and DAB+).

Thank You Jean-Paul.
About DAB+ it is sad - but on the other hand I don't have to spend more time on that part.

About internet radio - I'm surprised about the June 2021 update you mention.
I did buy the Rotel unit June 9. 2021 - and although I did search for updates in June (Rotel/software) I did not find any. Also in June I subscribed to Rotel Receiva. com (Rotel Radio) without getting any information about the update that you have mentioned. According to the user manual - user should actually also get prompted when there is an available update. This should happen when the unit switches on. I was never prompted.

Right now I'm still able to use "Rotel Receiva" - and also to set up new stations etc.
My Rotel player also connects to the stations.
Now I only have to wait and see - for how long I will be able to use this service.
And when it is not available anymore - I suppose that the internet radio part is gone as is the dab+

Don't wait and see (why wait? The first hand info of Rotel seems very clear) but use the forced UPGRADE feature in the menu. Maybe they prolonged the service as complaints came in ?! Today, right now as the risk of having an unusable device outweighs the few minutes it takes big time. It could be possible that you have got a late device with the update already on it but I doubt that. The procedure as linked to in my previous post tells how to check that. After the update it is Version: 266-a-137-a-031. In the announcement it says BWgroup was busy to obtain the rights to the servers but had not had a reply of Qualcomm then...

If you bought the device new on June 9, 2021 I would advise to bring it back and ask for a refund. It would be silly to accept a new device that is not able to receive the by now standard DAB+ and, in a short time from now, lack of internet radio. It was already outdated when you got it and will be possibly severely hampered when you keep it.

I would have contacted a Rotel dealer in DK tomorrow - but now I have followed your advice.
I succeeded with update - had to do it twice - and now it is ok since I have version 266-1-137-1-031 on my unit.
Being able to do the update was another surprise to me - because Rotel just mention that it would have to be before the server from reciva was closed in June.
The update is not present on Rotels support page either.

Thanks a lot Jean-Paul - you have been very helpful to me.
Have a nice day.

Version 266-1-137-1-031 seems an update to the announced update 266-a-137-a-031?!? That would also explain why you had to do it twice. As mentioned... it seems BWgroup has the rights to the servers now of which they mentioned the intention in the announcement.

Well done and make it a habit to check firmware at least every 6 months on routers, printers, NAS (I have one that got 14 firmware updates in less than a year), TV's so practically all electronic devices! And eh... how about DAB+ now? You should do a complete new scan/search for channels.

No sorry I wrote wrong ver. no. It is v/266-a-137-a-031 that I have now.

I did make a factory reset 4-5 days ago due to issues with remote.
I noticed that doing a factory reset gives to options. 1/ Main and 2/Module.
I did only reset MAIN. My main software is now ver 15 xxx (2010).
I can not see any information about Module ver no.

Do you think that I now have to perform update on Main software and Module software??
And if I do - will that effect the updated service pack today (266-a-137-a-031)???

Regarding DAB+/ no luck. I still got messages like "no service" and "no stations".

Now you are overasking me. I don't know the device that deep. Module soft/firmware is what defines DAB/DAB+ so I suggest ask the danish branch of BWgroup/Rotel for info. I know there are versions with different modules/different module firmwares. I wouldn't reset the module firmware without knowing what exactly will happen.

I have some headless devices by brand "X" here that used to pick up firmware from the servers after a user reset. Point being that the servers do not exist anymore 🙂 So empty firmware chip and no firmware at all = device EOL.
